Now if I was really a hard core hot rod guy I would know this but.... I have this transmission that came with a bunch of early Olds stuff I got years ago. They said it was a Cad-LaSalle but it wasn't important, it was just part of the "stuff" I got. Well, I've been tripping over this thing for years and it's time to figure out what it really is and send it on to someone who can actually use it. I recently read an article in a 1954 HRM (Stude-illac) that included a picture of the Cad bellhousing that they replacing with a McBar adapter - lo and behold it's the same as the one I got with this old trans. '49-53 Cad? Can anyone ID this trans and bellhousing? (the gold bellhousing)
Bellhousing looks like a 1454141 Cad manual transmission '49-'54 Cad sideshift trans appears to have Ford '42 and later pick up open drive bearing retainer on rear
Really? I wondered about that, would a photo from the back help? Was that a common modification for using a Cad trans in an early Ford?
Yes! usually the mainshaft was shortened and resplined for the torque tube drive, but yours was set up for open drive, not as common.
Did the bellhousing come with a bearing retainer for the release bearing to ride on in the center hole or is bellhousing only?
The bellhousing is about 4 1/8" deep according to my old Stanley tape measure. Here is a picture from the back side.
have you opened up the tranny to inspect the gears, synchronizer and the wear on the 1st/reverse gear?
