Your car looks great! Been following your thread since I picked up a '50 2-door. Mine is all stock, and I'd like to start by lowering it all the way around. I really like the way yours turned out, and it looked like a fairly easy job. So, you have 2" blocks in the rear (started with 3", then cut down to 2"), and then cut about 1-1/2 coils off the front? I'd eventually like to upgrade the drivetrain, and possibly do either dropped spindles up front, or a MustangII upgrade.

Absolutely LOVE your car! And thank you!

Yes, it is 2" in the rear, and 1 1/2 coils ( I think...if that is what my thread said earlier, than yes!) My longterm plan is to get Jamco springs in the front and bag the rear to get the stance that I want, like in the photochopped rendering, closer to a 3-3 1/2" drop. Not laying frame, but laid out pretty decent.

So here is my latest rendering. After some chatting with Voodoo Larry, thing about doing some cruiser skirts to carry over the 2 tone paint, and adding a trim piece to the top edge to carry over. Also going to mold in the lake pipes...

    Thoughts?

It looks good and I like your plan. All that's left to do is get out there get it done. I just hope your shop is heated because it's brutal out there now.

Well, unfortunately it is not! I am heading to my parents place next weekend (23rd) and we are starting the assembly on the 283. I am COMPLETELY shooting for the moon, but the Chicago Motorama is the first weekend in March. Voodoo Larry wants cars that are WIPs as well as completed cars too, so I am hoping to get it there with the new motor in and under its own power...but we shall see! Plan is to get the motor running, then get the car to MI, drop it in, and trailer it back. Couple shake down runs, and see what happens. I will keep you all posted on the progress.

Come spring, and warmer weather, I will be digging into the body mods/repairs and paint.

Lake pipes and new taillights ordered. Engine gets rebuilt this weekend.

I also believe I have a buyer for the old drivetrain, so that'll help out GREATLY.

    Progress friends...stay posted! :)

Since we are re using the pistons, cleaning the carbon out of the ring channels was taking some serious time....crankshaft and cam are in, majority of pistons done. But we are in an unheated garage only working with a space heater...so it's time for a break. Dad is going to finish the pistons, and we will return another weekend to finish...

    Before and after...

After much deliberation and thoughts on "unique" taillights, drenched, etc. I really like how streamline and low profile the factory ones are. Once I remove the bumper risers, and shave the deck lid and license plate lights, I think it's gonna look real nice... So I mocked up the location of the lake pipes. The 60" is the perfect length. I want the opening to follow the curve right before the rear quarter hump. The distance from the front wheel opening to the leading edge of the door is about 14". I'm going to have about a 20" molding. I am going to mock that up later this week. I'll take it! Got my skirts in....spray bombing em for now. Also took the visor off to get primed for eventual "real" paint....then decided I think I like the look. More streamlined. I see why some guys leave these unchopped, no visor. Might run it this way for a while, see what I think...

Like your ride... Just want to offer my two cents... Slow down with the rattle cans - just spot repair the rust spots and touch up.

KEEP the patina! Add wide whites and enjoy it for a while... You can always shoot new paint but the patina is only original once before someone paints it!

BTW, it's your ride so build it they way you want...

Hey, thanks for your input! I actually did exactly as you did...just spot repair, etc...and drove the heck out of it this past year. But pictures definitely do this car more justice (I'm also the toughest critic... ;) ) but I've always wanted a fully painted kustom, which is happening this year. Nothing high dollar. Basic and simple to get the job done (basically the same color as on the skirts/touch up areas)

    Stay tuned!

Had some more fun this weekend. Engine is 2/3 complete on the rebuild...but we couldn't resist a mockup. It's gonna look killer resting under the hood.

Thanks Jeff! Until I can afford finned valve covers, this is how it is going to stay, just reuse the old Chevrolet stamped script covers, and I will paint the script. Once I can afford the finned, I am considering painting the intake gold as well, with a finned air cleaner...all trad!!

  29. Not sure how I missed this before, but great build so far! Where abouts are you located? I'm 2 minutes from the Auto Museum in Volo. Im excited to see how you go about making those covers on the lake pipes. I think I need to do that on my car. My lake pipes are my only exhaust & my wife already burned her leg on them once.

Hey, thanks man! Ryan just moved this thread over to the "Traditional Customs" area, hence why you may have missed it before.

I am in the Elmhurst/Villa Park area, and plan on being at the Voodoo A Go Go at Volo July 2. Hope I will see you around at the other midwest shows too (Symco, Jalopyfest, Iron Invasion, etc). I plan to be at them all. Will you be at Motorama March4-6?

As far as the lakers, they are going to be dummy, at least for the time being. Also, the molded area won't be running far enough back to avoid a burn. One idea though, have you heard of the guys that run the real exhaust parallel to the lakers, then at the laker exit, weld in the exhaust exit? This is what I may consider doing... Slide1.jpg
