That's great family history right there.Have you seen the books about the Oakland Speedway by Tom Motter? There may be some photos of your Grandfather in the first book.Second book deals with the post war years

  3. I have seen those. The cover illustration was done by a hunting buddy of my Father in Laws, Rich Radigonda. My grandfather isn't listed in the book. I think he was more of a "part" owner in a car and a general 30's hoodlum (lots of street racing). I have a few pictures and that's about it. Like a lot of guys he came back from the war started a family and never raced again. I still have a "plant" stand he made in the Oakland Tech wood shop in the mid 30's. I haven't been to the part of town the racetrack was in since I was a kid, but I understand the bar that was across the street from the gates is still there? The Champion or something racy sounding? You probably know better than I.

Yeah, the bar is still there. Its called the Stadium Club and last time I was in there, the owner didn't know anything about the track it got its name from.I remember him saying"Why wasn't it called the San Leandro Speedway? This ain't Oakland.."..haha

Sounds like you have a cool family history with Hot Rods too.See ya around

Done! Ill admit it was hard to not vote for a fellow '65 C-10 from Oklahoma but I voted for you any how. Great story, having just lost my dad a few months back who was big in to the car show scene and restoring old cars I could relate to your story. I doubt I would be sitting here on this forum right now if it was not for my dad instilling a love for old cars in me.

    best of luck

Sad to say,but no,theres not anything on the walls or behind the bar that gives an indication of what its former life was.Another piece of history lost :(

  17. He said the bar across from the track was where they would drink a few pops after the races. LOL!! It's cool they haven't renamed it. Sad that it's heratige is gone though. I wonder if anyone knows there was a race track across the street? He was a very mellow kind man when I was a kid but I bet he was a hell raiser back then. I remember a story about nickle fishbowl beers :)
