With all these flashback photos am wondering if there are any photos of women drivers / team owners?

 

There were no woman drivers in the timeframe of this thread.

There have been pictures of Marie Hulman George and Bessie Pioli. The only 2 women car owners.

IMO the Belanger was the best looking car if the upright era! And it won lots!

 

Women weren't even allowed in the pit or garage area until the early 70s.(well after the time frame of this thread)
Bessie Lee Paoli and Mary Hulman were car owners in the 50s and they had to stand behind the pit and garage fences to see their cars.........

The #11 car looks like it has a V8 because of the injector stacks, but has an old fashioned exhaust. I don't know that I've ever seen that. That is really a sharp looking car.

 

Your right, I have seen that style header on the midgets even with the Chevy v8 head but I have not seen a sprinter with a Chevy and that "Lakes" style header. Although the early Flathead v8 sprinters did have that kind of tail pipe.

 

George Landry driving for Walt Beletsky in 1958, eastern sprint cars, had exhaust headers like that. I don't remember seeing the "hooker" style until 1960.

 

Early on that wasn't uncommon. Both Chet Wilson's Offy Killer and Barzda's Chevy had that type exhaust.

I believe that 11 car Jack Lancaster in happens to be the Fetter Bros. Sprinter.

 

It's hard to tell for sure in the photo but that looks like Clay Smith pointing at the left rear of the Springfield car. At any rate Clay was the mechanic for both Agajanian and Bessie Paoli throughout 1952. And, of course, he won the 500 with one car and the National Championship with the other that year. Supposedly, Chuck Stevenson took the Paoli ride with the condition that Clay Smith prepare the car and Aggie agreed. Smith already had a booming business by this time and I guess Aggie was basically a customer of his since he was also building engines (not to mention cams) for various other racers.

 

A little off topic, but, Jordan-BRM Grand Prix driver, Scott Stoddard is dead, possibly, from serious injuries suffered in the 1965 Monaco Grand Prix crash, also involving American driver Pete Aron.


Actor, Brian Bedford, the actor who played Stoddard in the movie, Grand Prix, has died at age 80. Oddly enough, Bedford never held a drivers license. godspeed, Scott!!

 

I just talked to Bopper who was picking a frame up from Jokerr and got the story on the tire. It was an A1 recap and yes, it did come apart, taking out Dick's camera in the process.

Thanks for the follow-up. This is just one of those rare shots that look like a disaster waiting to happen, on a couple of different levels. And I'd guess that it probably wasn't a cheapy, "disposable" camera like a GoPro! Hopefully, the car fared better.
