I grew up in North Tonawanda in the '70s and I remember the whales. Man I used to beg and plead with my Mom to go through the one in Tonawanda and once we finally did - it was great as a little kid. As I got older and in my teens I remember thinking less of those structures when they sat idle. Now, how I wish I could see those cool whales and palm trees and sea horses on the lamp posts again and take my son through the car wash on a sunny day. Funny how life works...

    Here's a surprise from 1959:

Did the guy who owned the Ala Kart live in Fresno, or have family there? Kind of odd to see it in a gas station ad.
    Part 2 next...

The alley shot of Wayne Arteaga's garage with the Stone Woods and Cook Willys in the garage.
I spent a lot of time in that alley being schooled on things that go fast.

Chrisb-where'd you get the Bullard pics? Nice to see something local, even when it was a bit before my time.

"Chipper" went on to bigger and better things, becoming a US Congressman for the 17th District. Basically his home turf.

My grandmother used to take me to that K-Mart way back when. When's the last time you saw a K-Mart parking lot that crowded?

Got 'em from various Bullard yearbooks online; of course the scans are usually rather small and washed out so I just do the best I can fixing them up.
I see you're from Clovis - my next post should be of interest...;)

When my father bought a '65 Beetle it had a decal like that about no lowering the windows. I took my driver's test in that car and the cop gave me hell for the decal. Thought he was going to flunk me for it.
