I have a 327 with a mild cam. Currently has an intake with no oil filler tube. I was going to run a vintage valve cover and drill the holes for a breather and a PCV but would like to know what manifold with a filler tube would be ideal to run. Has stock ram horns. It's in a Nomad

  2. I have a 300hp chevy intake on mine. It has the tube and Edelbrock carb. Unless of course your thinking about an aluminum intake. Tim

I would suggest an old Edlebrock C4B,C3B orC3BX . They mimic the factory aluminum high rise found on the 340 ,350, and 365 HP 327's. These and the Z28,Lt1 units are all good , but factory ones are getting pricy.

Edelbrock C4B is a pretty good dual plane intake. I think that they were available both with and without the oil fill. It's similar in design to a Stock Chevy 340 hp. 327 intake.

I recommend you get that intake manifold from racer-x. That's the best manifold you could use on your 327.

IMO the best intake for a SBC is the victor junior. A buddy of mine runs it on his well built 350, in his '55 and the performance is great.

I would bet there is not an oil fill tube on a victor jr, not to mention the fact that it is not at all traditional.....edelbrock c3b or c4b are excellent street manifolds with good performance in the 1500-5500 rpm range

And the C3B, same manifold only with a notch in the plenum for the 3bbl carb butterfly. Overall this is an ideal manifold, fairly inexpensive and with the filler tube. Closest to the GM aluminums but much less costly.

I'm in total agreement on the factory 300 HP 327 intake using a 600 Holley; other than that intake any 180 degree factory or aftermarket aluminum intake. I just recently sold my Edelbrock C4B, the earlier version with 4 holes, for cheap and with a good Edelbrock carburetor. I also have an Edelbrock C3B I can combine with an Edelbrock carburetor for the same price. No one can beat my price! Stay away from the single plane, open plenum intakes for the street, unless you got your foot in it all the time, and have low gears. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.

The C4B will not work with a large HEI, if that matters.

If it were mine, I'd run the factory 350 HP aluminum intake or one of the copies from Edelbrock (Performer RPM is one), Holley, or other aftermarket manufacturers. The fact that the all made/make copies of the OEM unit speak pretty highly of the design.

BTW, you could run a vented cap on your filler tube and run the PCV valve out of the "road draft tube" hole in the back of the block and still run your non vented valve covers if you wanted. Chevrolet did for the first PCV setups they installed on the assembly line.

I run a Performer EPS that is available with a filler tube, if you choose to buy new. I also have a C3BX on another engine I may swap onto my 327.

All 327's have an opening for a draft tube. I've never had one on 4 327's I've had

I believe all small journal blocks have the provision for the road draft tube.

Where exactly would I find the plug or ???

  18. next to the dist hole. most put a freeze plug in it. the draft tubes are messy dripping oil. the pic above with the blue tape on it shows the hole. the tape is covering the dist hole.

    Yup, listen to these guys.
Two castings, both great intakes, both pricey nowadays.
    64-65 casting # 3844461
    66-67 casting # 3890490
Biggest difference is the direction of the oil fill tube and water neck orientation.
If you can get the one from racer x at a reasonable price I'd grab it.
One thing though; if the OEM fill tube is missing, be aware that some of the reproduction tubes Do Not Fit.
Instead of using a road draft tube, the "fresh air tube" is reproduced, it goes where the
road draft tube goes, get the GM period pieces (66-67), for the pcv system in repros, like the intakes, these NOS pieces are $$$.
65 did not use a pcv system.

This is my 67 style l79, sorry, don't have any better photos within reach.

    20160108_140752.jpg

At least two styles of fresh air tubes are being repopped.
Straight style 65 Corvette and Chevelle

Curved style 66-67 Nova, Chevelle, and 67-68 Camaro.
    This is my 67

You will also need this valley baffle if it's missing, still can find used or in reproduction.

  23. I used a C4B Edelbrock on my 350 HP 327 with a 950 3 barrel in a 64 'vette with 4 speed and 4.10 gears. Gas was less than 35 cents a gallon, thank God....went like stink!

    @Rocky
Holley 3 barrel, now there's a piece from the past for sure, never had one, but from what I always heard it sounds like I was better off for it.

A baffled PCV valve cover grommet fits the road draft hole perfectly. I used one on several 283s.

I second the Edelbrock C4B or a machine shop can blow a hole in a Performer RPM

I have 2, they actually work pretty good in the right application. One would run like jack the bear on the motor you are putting in your roadster.;)

And I want a '66 L-79 intake for the motor in my Chevy II.
