And everyone seems to forget that A.J. Watson was the mechanic on this car. He was between his Zink and Wilke jobs at the time and filled in for Ruiz at a couple of races.

I have the Dixon car as # 97 in 1963, #36 in '64, #32 in '65, #18 in '66/'67 and #66 in '68. #36 in '65 was a "Magnuson Special", that later ran as #67 in '67/'68, driver Tom Campbell. Pretty sure it was a Hoosier car.

That is, of course, if it's not a 1964 picture: the Leffler car had #25 since the early fifties, and the Wergland car was #14 since '63 - but I don't think it's the Dixon car, I'm sure I've seen a picture of it someplace (but danged if I remember!)

1x-9-bb jr th 65-2.JPG Looking closer at the Stapp car, There is something (?) that appears to be duct taped to the roll bar. No idea what it could be  though. Also looks like the LR tire is about to come apart.

A note from Larry Pfitzenmaier down in Sonoita, AZ:
    "
    Hi Carl,
With reference to the device attached to the left side of the #4 Stapp car roll bar: From Wallen’s “Roar From The Sixties”, page 46: “Carl Williams carries movie camera on left side roll bar.”
"The Stapp #4 is now on display at the Arizona Open Wheel Museum."
    Best,
    Larry

  21. When that tire went, I wonder if it took the camera with it? :(

The rise and fall of USAC has been well documented but from these humble beginnings USAC went on to become the be-all-end-all of open wheel racing over the next 25 years or so. 1x-11-z- usac.JPG

The winning car was the Ray Bolander Offy. Ray was a friend of mine here in Fortville Indiana.
