Hot Rods 1931 Model A Hot Rod Re-Paint

Sorry for my absence the past couple of years. Been busy working on a non Hot Rod, car project. But I'm back!
As many of you are aware, my family still has the 1931 Model A Hot Rod my father built when he was a teenager....over 60 years ago!
Well, we have resisted doing anything other than touch up and maintenance on the car for the past 10 years, but as you can see in the pictures I am posting, it is time for a re-paint.
We already have the body stripped down to bare metal and will be soon starting on the underside.
The plan is to preserve the car as it was first done many years ago. just giving the "Old Girl" a much deserved fresh coat of paint.

Looks like it initially had some adhesion problems when painted years ago. Cant beat removing paint with a razor blade. Yes it definitely needed it. Good job.

i kinda like it the way it was

 

We had to repair the deck lid back in the early 80's....something fell on it while it was in storage. Then we re-painted the grill shell and the rear part of the right rear 1/4 panel about 10 years ago. Other then those areas, all the paint is over 60 years old.

Old hot rods deserve to be rebuilt, restored, fix the stuff that bugged you in the past and mak'em safe then drive the heck out them.

 

You are doing the right thing painting it, your dad built it to be smooth and shiny not to look like it had leprosy!... I don't understand these "don't paint them" guys...just MYHO!

 

What a New Years treat...haroldd this is quite the historical machine. Please if possible could you share any photos from back in the day with us albeit just looking at that thing puts a fellow back in time. You obviously are into going fast kind of things. Fenders will stay on the car. They were actually made from a couple of continental kits that my dad cut up. We are painting it the same color. The only changes will be cleaning up some of the welds on the front cross member where the front motor mounts are.. When my Dad built the car he only had access to a torch with a pretty heavy cutting tip and an old arc welder....No MIG & TIG back then...not to mention Plasma cutters!

Thank You, everyone, for the kind words and encouragement! My Father and I have been tossing around the idea of doing this for the past few years. The only thing holding us back, other then a couple of other projects, were some of the negative comments we got from people at a few car shows when we talked about re-painting it.

From all of the positive comments I see here....we are doing the right thing.

 

What colour curious minds is wondering? I kinda like that creamy look there...

 

Same color. We are even kicking around using Lacquer instead of Enamel paint.

 

Here are a few more pictures of our progress. This car was originally a coupe that the top had been damaged beyond repair. So my Dad took it off and made it into a roadster. You can see his metal and lead work in a couple of the pictures. I am also including a sign board he had made up with all of the modifications.

 

It definitely deserves a facelift and a fresh coat of paint. Looks like he did a damned good job of building it back then as well!

 

The car has the original upholstery from when it was built in the late 50's. Amazingly it is pretty much all there and in very good condition. We need to repair the corners of the seat back where some rodents had a feast. Here are pictures of one of the door interior panels with close ups of the material used. Do any of you know of a source for this type of material?
