Me and my brother picked up this tub back in feb. We had been wanting to pickup an A for a while, and we're keen to build a pre-war styled rod- but couldn't afford a coupe or roadster! We spotted this tourer in a local trader mag. It ran, was registered, had a restored driveline, and a great patina so we jumped on it! Here's a pic when we bought it: Deal was done, handshaked and pickup was arranged for the following weekend. We called the owner mid-week to arrange pickup- and to our shock we found out he had given it a backyard aerosol paint job to try and appeal to more buyers?!? We couldn't believe it- one of the draw cards for us was the aged paint- it added a lot of character and helped hide some of the bodies imperfections. He thought we had bailed on the sale. Never the less- we still wanted it, and he delivered it to us that week. Here it is the day we got it: You will notice the AMAZING paint job. First thing to go were the fenders, running boards, spare wheel and hood: We needed to loose the 21" wires so we bought some 16" wires and ordered some firestones: Barely fit in my wife's little Audi! We started hunting for parts to hop it up- managed to get hold of a Winfield manifold and stromberg 97: Paint had to go, so we attempted to strip off the recent green layer. Using graffiti remover and a high pressure hose, we managed sort of take one layer of paint off: We will have to even paint out out a little bit, but it's getting there. Still plenty more stuff to do- lowered, rust, interior, exhaust. But it drives and we love it- lots of fun beating around the Dandenong Ranges here in Melbourne!! More posts to come as we go. Wow thats a nice find, looks like an early 28, any pics of the floorboard? You guys are going to have a blast with this one. LUCKY!!!
I don't see it. And, I just bought an AR hood side on Friday with tapered louvers and the upwards bottom roll.
It's a bit of a Frankenstein car. Bits of 28 and 29. It has a mix of outside and inside door handles, 29 headlights, red steering wheel. Body (minus the doors) looks to be 28 though. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Great what you can find in the Sheds......Drove this one home from Traralgon to Sale...$600 OH YA....that was 1974....how time flys
In 1974, $60 to $80 was the average weekly wage for a tradesman . We were buying registered cars like FJ/s for $50 to $80. So $600 was a LOT of money then.
Started measuring up the interior this week. Simple ply base with some heavy foam mounted nice and low! Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Forgot pics: How it's looking atm: A good mate is letting us keep it in his garage whilst we get it ready for Chopped. It's in good company in his shed! Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Just got the car back from Chopped. Ran great all weekend- loads of fun! Last week was spent sorting out the interior. Ended up using an old army blanket (stains and all) as a temporary interior for now. Also had to give it a name- so we got Mark and Matt Bailey to whip something up! Came up a treat. Here's some pics of it from over the weekend. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
