GASSER MUST HAVES and cant haves?

Plus the late 60's paint is way cool.

 

I was in a Trade school in 68. St Louis, Mo. and across the river was Alton Dragway. They ran awesome "Gasser wars" on Wednesday nights. Saw some great races there. Old style gassers were still in style. My room mate had a 57 Corvette with a high winding 283 that we ran in the lesser gas classes at Alton, St Louis International (1/8 mi.) and MAR

Presently building a Studebaker gasser. glass tilt front, 502, in old style dress. Had a C/G Nova and an A/G Anglia gasser back in the early seventies..

 

Did you ever see this one run there it ran a lot there and pacific raceway 1/8 mile

TOO SMALL!

 

I couldn't count the number of 10,000 rpm 288" small block Chevys that ran gasser and other modified classes back before NHRA killed Modified Eliminator.

Except when you're class racing, running weight/cubic inch. Then the lighter cars seem to have an advantage.

I'll agree with mores better with street cars. Something north of 450 cubic inches is about right.

 

I know this discussion is centered around the gas class cars, but........
Da Grump put the fear in many a Hemi driver with a lowly 327 and a carburator.

You know how a certain group of people want to poo poo the sbc, but that poo flavored crow would shut em up pretty quick if they knew the history of drag racing in the 60's.

I built engines for 25 yrs back in the days of hi-perf factory stock parts, one was a 489' BBF with a tunnel ram that wipped up on a lot of 454' BBC in 18' ski boats, so I love them all big & small

But it is still hard to beat a good running high winding small block for cubic inch - per HP - per weight - per size !!

My little 406 has done some despicable things to a few larger CID cars.

 

When you wing a big block every knows, including the deaf.

Had a stock 500 Caddy in this one.

 

No! But some BBs around here are MAD at the blown 406, and disillusioned ! But I also like a BB, with BIG C.I.D. And yea, they do sound great. Happy Holidays.

It ran 13.45. Last I heard it was in Indianapolis with the same driveline.

 

Quite a few after markets for this engine. So should run real strong, if same.
