Time for a build thread for my '27 Model T RPU. The car is on the road and nearly done. I plan to post a ton of pics and some background.

Back in 2008, my dad was at an auction outside of Yuma, Arizona. He saw the '27 at the auction and ended up buying it. It was in good shape, it had been owned by a family that owned a construction company in Longview Washington. It was a turtle deck car originally, they put a PU bed on it. It sat in their showroom most of its life. It was sold eventually and ended up outside of Yuma, in a shed, for 30 years.

That pic is how it sat. Dad grew up in the 50's, but the 3 pedal original thing was not going to work. Eventually he shipped it to me in Indiana.

I turned a few wrenches, then took it to the master - Jim Linder (Bubba). Took him a couple of hours to put his distributor in and fire it. Pic courtesy of tierod

I had been driving the car since 2010. It has been the only car I have had also. Was fun, but 35 mph was getting old. I wanted something I could drive distances. I asked dad about hot rodding it.... his response was as long as it has 3 deuces and open pipes he didn't care. I am working on building an AV8 with my 15 year old. Started that with a bare frame, there is a thread on here about that too, but it is alot of work obviously. I have also been working a million hours.

Roll all of that together, and I decided to farm this out to have it built. I started collecting parts, writing down a budget, asking around about builders. We are fortunate to have several good ones in the midwest.

I decided to have Tom Culbertson build the car. He has obviously been around awhile, and built some cool cars (El Tiki, etc.).

    The rough plan...

    1956 292 Y block
    C4 with mummert adapter
    1965 mustang 8" rear
    wishbones front and rear
A frame with fabbed middle and rear crossmembers
    3 deuces and open pipes

I sold the complete running chassis out from under it in August.

Schmidt's in Indy did the machine work. They built a 312 for me 20 years ago and did a good job. This one turned out well too.

Front end is a dropped axle, with 53 Ford F100 front backing plates/drums. You can see the 3 deuces on the engine above too. It is an original Edelbrock 573 intake with 3 large logo 97's. Middle crossmember tacked in too.

Motor mount in process of being fabbed below.

Body was in good shape overall. Firewall cleaned up good. Needed patches where the windshield stantions mount.

I am 6'5" tall, Tom cut the seat riser out, and modified the lower back portion. That lower hump is still in the photo, but gets cut out eventually. I need all the room I can get.

Cut up a front wishbone for the rear. Mounting bracket welded on below Scott1927T 119.JPG

Coils are 140# QA1 by the way, they ride great.

You can see below the orange cardboard template for the lower firewall sheetmetal Tom made. Scott1927T 136.JPG

Dash shots below. Sectioned quite a bit and filled in, from the shoebox.

Headers under construction. And door stripped down. Fortunate to have a fairly clean body. Scott1927T 143.JPG

Tom modified the stock stantions and had custom glass made. The pic below shows the mock up with original bottom glass portion.

    Scott1927T 184.JPG
Also built a small panel for the back of the tub to line up with the bed.

Behind the firewall. Tom wired it from scratch, mounted everything underneath. Wires route through the oval shaped tube, which protects everything from foot traffic.

An alternative '32 grill shell mount so the firewall could stay unblemished. It has worked great.

Off to paint at this point... better shot of rear. I requested a hitch be mounted so I can pull a teardrop trailer. It is totally hidden under the bed.

It is funny... I remember the "How long does it take to build a frame" thread from a couple of months ago. I dropped off my parts one day and drove a finished car out 125 days later. I have around 500 miles on it and it runs awesome. I will take it back for some tweaks, but it is all personal preference stuff. And keep in mind I am a CPA, although a mechanically inclined one. I have had to do more work on my Toyota Tacoma the last month than my new ride.

Dustin Cooper did the paint - he did the chassis/suspension and the body. The work is amazing. The entire project was in and out of his shop in 2 weeks. Again, I read horror stories about paint shops. I have been fortunate.

This is a decent indoor shot of the color. It is a 2011-newer Ford truck color - bronze metallic. The bonus is John Cooper's nice ass in the pic too. (owner of El Tiki and a "few" other cars)
