I have a bent axle. I don't know what the reared came out of I will give all the information I can if you need additional info I will remeasure tomorrow. The carrier number is D2VW-A. The housing end looks like a big old ford style the bolt spacing is 2.40 on the ends. The spline count is 31 and the length is 31 7/8 " long the offset is 1 5/8". The backing plates are 12" with 11" drums. If you have a number to a tech support I will call them. This is the first problem I have had with the rear ended so it is time to work out these issues. Thanks in advance for your help.
Just a guess..72 Lincoln? They had the big ring gear rearend. The D is for the 1970s and the V is a Lincoln
The reason I believe it is a 9.5" is that it has the rib that turns down into the other ribs. Thanks again
Big brother to ford's 9 inch. Not many performance gears for them. I'm told a 9 inch third member will fit the 9 and 3/8ths housing and a 9 and 3/8ths third member will fit the 9 inch housing if you notch out the housing to fit the bigger ring gear into it. I had a 66 Lincoln 2.80 rear end in my old 53 F-100...worked great! I also blew the spider gears out of my 9 and 3/8ths doing a massive 1 wheel burnout with my 66 Lincoln coupe... Hope you have better luck removing the axle shafts than I did...had to use a 3/8ths chain and whip those axles out..
9 3/8" pumpkin identification 9 3/8 housing identification, note 2 x notches in flange to clear larger ring gear. D2VW-A. D (Decade) 1970 2 (Year digit) 1972 V (car line) Lincoln W (Engineering line) Axle
Yes that is the rearend. Thanks for the code information. I know a lot more than I did last night. I will start looking for a axle replacement.
Just a note to say thanks again for the help and that Hudlow Axles of Rossville Ga. is going to meet me and see if he has a used one or needs to make a new one.
Looks like you found the info you were looking for but I just got to know how on earth did you bend a 31 spline ford axle? Is the housing still straight? Sorry I am like a cat and just lost another life.
On top of that; as far as I know, the housings and axles were no larger (or stronger)than those from a 9 in. And that center section with the curly Q couldn't have added any appreciable strength. Did Ford think people with a 7,000 lb. car were gonna be doing burnouts with their 2.78 geared, Thunderbirds and Lincolns, where was the need for a 3/8" larger ring gear.
Pulling campers. I once saw a 6 cylinder Nova (hatch back) with a 12 bolt and a 3 speed. Never could understand the logic in that.
Once I get this fixed I don't think I will have a problem again. My truck only weighs 1800 lbs. I think the axle was bent when I got the truck. Now I'm going to go through the rearend since the winter rebuild time is here.
I wanted to let everyone know I met Steve Hudlow of Hudlow axles, talk about an impressive guy. He met me one his day off and when he saw my axle he knew exactly what it was and he had one we made sure it was true and I asked him to write down what bearing I would need to purchase and he said that he was going to install it before I left. I am blown away by how nice he was and the extent he went through to make sure I was taken care of. He also does incredible work on rearends shorten etc. if you need any of this work done close to the south east give him a call. It was an honor to get to know him.
