Projects My new Sears and Roebuck 1932 Ford pickup...

I'm cruising C/List a few days ago and see this 1932 Ford pickup for sale. It's been listed for 5 days and it hasn't sold...hmm...must be a rust bucket piece-o-shit...I call anyway.

Young 28 year old guy answers and tells me it's been in the family since new...really!...I'm all ears.
His great granddad bought it new for the family farm up in Missouri. Thru the years it was used/abused and changed around. It got a new Diamond B engine at one point. It was passed down to granddad, and then to dad...and when dad died recently, the 28 year old son went up to St.Louis to bring it down to Tulsa. Son isn't really into it, so...for sale!

At some point dad decided to 'purdeefy it' for parades with a real chromed car grille...it's really nice, and upgrade the brakes to '48 hydraulics. In typical farm fashion, the original brake pedal was disconnected and let fall to the floor while a new swing pedal and M/C was mounted to the firewall...at least they didn't torch the original brake pedal off. (no offence to the farmers on here )

Now about the wooden canopy stakebed...it ain't a homemade POS, it's really a nice quality wood bed kit. Grandad actually bought it new in a crate from Sears and Roebuck. The son doesn't know why the bed and rear fenders were replaced. Rear fenders look like sedan fenders with added inboard metal strips...more farm stuff.

The wheels have me stumped...they look kinda like Studebaker Artillery wheels...anyone know for sure?

The body is rust free...really... however it has a lot of farmer upgrades...like the top was welded on at the back of the cab ....and the usual fender bead cracks and welds.

This thing actually starts/runs/steers/stops...now for the bad news. Because it's an outta-state vehicle...it has to have a vin number inspection. They gotta physically see the vin...so... I pull the fender off...and...no number...must be under the cab...shit...gotta pull cab

What are my plans? Get it titled/insured and play with it for awhile.

For what is worth here is the serial number on my '32 roadster:



The non original frame welt is pushed back to expose the number. The black metal to the left is my front fender and the metal to the right is the foot of the firewall. Have you carefully taken it down to the bare metal in this area? It was Ford's intention that this number be used to register the vehicle so it should be visible without removing the fender. If it was a passenger car the serial number would appear two additional places on the top of the left frame rail under the body but I believe I have read that these two additional places may be missing on a pickup. I like the patina, drive it and enjoy it. Be careful with the brakes. It is amazing how bad some of the conversions can be. Look out for copper brake lines. Does the firewall flex when you step on the pedal?

Also check Van Pelt's. I believe '32 up has numbers in 3 places. Might just be able to lift bed instead of cab.

After you have exhausted you search for the number on the frame you should look on the flywheel housing on a pad near the starter. The DMV likes to use the number on the frame but if the number on the flywheel housing matches the paperwork you might be able to convince them to use this number.

Larry: What is a diamond B engine? Also, should be a vin on the frame kick over the rear end.

 

Neat truck with some neat history. I think the B motor, juice brakes, chromed grille and artillery wheels would qualify it as a survivor hot rod, at least in the very mildest sense.

A round mirror head, some sticker removal, and maybe put the stake sides up in the attic, would be the only things I'd touch.
