Thanks for the tubing pics. I've got a few piles of early T roadster bodies that will someday need this treatment. Looking forward to seeing how you tie the body to the frame/subrails.

That Rigid bender, is it for electrical use or is that a tool made for some other purpose?

Jeff, I bought it 35 years ago, it bends 3/4 od tube, I am not sure if that is a conduit size. When I started on the perimeter tube, I had some 7/8" conduit, and an old conduit bender, that you step on. The 7/8 didn't want to lay in the bead as well as the 3/4, and wasn't as stiff as the 3/4 ERW, so I changed plans. I have been making inside shoes for some of the Hossfeld dies, to widen the range of radius I can bend on different sizes. This example is taking a 6" center line die for 1" and bending a piece of 1"- 065 wall tube 180 degrees. Band saw it down the middle and make a liner for the shoe that will bend 7/8 tube, using a holding and following shoe that fits the 7/8. I have done this on many sizes including a 1-3/4, to bend 1-5/8. When I built some side boards for my '40 pickup, I wanted the bends to be 2-1/2" radius, so I did the same on this project. I will post some pics for those who are interested. IMG_5230.JPG IMG_6094.JPG IMG_6095.JPG

Great work, Marty! I've been quietly following along with this build for a while. Very cool to see all the techniques behind recreating a vintage racer like this one.

Hey Marty, I'm doing good. I have also made some of those reducing liners for some of my dies. Work great. Hmmm, great minds think alike:)

Here is the only shot I have at present, this is an 1/8" liner in a 1" die to bend 3/4", here again I used a 3/4 holding and follow around shoes. I will lay them out get some better pics. IMG_5053.JPG

    Marty,
I did the same thing so that I could bend 7/8" using the 1" dies in my Pro Tools bender.

For those of us with tube benders, it certainly multiplies our capabilities, and with the price of die sets today, it's time well spent. I am fortunate, in that my Brother has a #2 machine as well. We try not to duplicate our die sets, and sharing broadens the selection we have between us, we can bend 3/4 to 1-3/4, and everything in between.

A few posts back I talked about my friend Jim Lindsay building a 29 RP that will be suited for TROG and the Colorado Hill Climb. Since I am going to acquire the fenders, aprons and brackets from this car, he had me build an exhaust system along with a belly pan . Here is the exhaust. I like to use 3/4 " .065 tubing to support and attach the belly pan to. Aluminum is .050 - 5052 alloy. IMG_6185.JPG IMG_6187.JPG IMG_6189.JPG IMG_6191.JPG IMG_6193.JPG IMG_6194.JPG

  18. Marty, I've done that with an old ratchet-type Enerpac pipe bender - made the cast aluminum dies work properly for tubing sizes.

The remaining thing to do, is mount the exhaust at the rear, and close in the front and rear of the pan. It should be finished and gone by the first of the week, so I can get back on Pat's and make some progress !

OJ, I am welding tapping plates to the tube frame, and will drill and tap 10/32 holes for mounting. The sign board on my wall advertised our local 5/8 dirt track, that closed in 1959. It's in great shape and the other side is exactly the same. It belongs to my old race partner Bobby Mead, who's uncle won the championship in '56 & '57. The trophy is from the '56 season, I watched my first auto races there in '54, been hooked on racing ever since ! IMG_1993.JPG IMG_1992.JPG

  26. Hi Marty,
Exhaust looks great, am curious as to its sizing, would that be 2" then stepping up to 2 1/2" or 3", with a 12" taper?
Appreciate and inspired by this thread.
    Cheers,
    Drewfus

    Hi Drewfus,
The pipe flanges at the "Y" manifolds were 2", so I used short, curved sections of 2", slipped into 2-1/8 for the head pipe. I cut the front tapered section of the 35-36 Ford inner drive shaft tube, to just slide into the 2-1/8. The Ford drive shaft tube measures 2-3/4". Thanks for your interest.

What a great project, why it took me so long to find it is a mystery, glad I'm up to speed now. Bob

Marty, would you show us a couple of pictures of the completed car on its wheels, with the belly pan and exhaust in place? Something like the first picture in post #346? Thanks!
