  5. Recorded in 1951, Rocket 88 is considered by many to be the first "Rock N Roll" tune recorded based on the style elements and instrument make up. Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats was essentially the same group as Ike Turner's Kings of Rhythm, I believe (chime in here Jonnie King).

    An interesting story. The fact that this was regarded to be the first recorded Rock N Roll tune is a bit of trivia that has been floating around in my head for decades. In the early 90's I was playing in a club and Ike Turner came in. No one in the club recognized him (including me). When I went on a break he approached me when we were both in the men's room. He said, "Man, I like the way you play" and then stuck out his hand and introduced himself. I said, "Ike, did you wash your hands?" No...I'm kidding...I didn't really say that. :) Anyway, we got to talking and he asked me to go out to his car and listen to some raw cuts he had on cassette from an album he was in the middle of recording. I thought that was really cool but I don't really get too excited about celebrities or famous people.

    So here I was with Ike Turner, sitting in his Lincoln Town Car listening to his new songs, and suddenly I remembered the fact about Rocket 88 and then it struck me...HOLY SHIT! I'm sitting here with the guy that recorded the first Rock N Roll song and he's asking me MY opinion ? WTF?!

    We hung out for a bit that night and later I visited him at his home. When the album was released, I bought it. I think it's cool that I got to hear it before anyone else. I've met quite a few famous people but that moment in the car with Ike has always stood out to me as the coolest.

    "Sweet Hitch-Hiker"

    Was Ridin' along side the highway, rollin' up the country side.
    Thinkin' I'm the devil's heatwave, what you burn in your crazy mind?
    Saw a slight distraction standin' by the road;
    She was smilin' there, yellow in her hair;
    Do you wanna, I was thinkin', would you care.

    [CHORUS:]
    Sweet Hitch-a-Hiker,
    We could make music at the Greasy King.
    Sweet Hitch-a-Hiker,
    Won't you ride on my fast machine?

    Cruisin' on thru the junction, I'm flyin' 'bout the speed of sound,
    Noticin' peculiar function, I ain't no roller coaster show me down.
    I turned away to see her, Woa! she caught my eye,
    But I was rollin' down, movin' too fast;
    Do you wanna, She was thinkin' can it last.

    [CHORUS]

    Was busted up along the highway, I'm the saddest ridin' fool alive.
    Wond'ring if you're goin' in my way, won't you give a poor boy a ride?
    Here she comes a ridin', Lord, She's flyin' high.
    But she was rollin' down, movin' too fast;
    Do you wanna, She was thinkin' can I last.

    [CHORUS]
    [CHORUS]
    [CHORUS]

    "Roll On Down The Highway"

    We rented a truck and a semi to go
    Travel down the long and the winding road
    Look on the map, I think we've been there before
    Close up the doors, let's roll once more

    Cop's on the corner, look he's starting to write
    Well, I don't need no ticket so I screamed out of sight
    Drove so fast that my eyes can't see
    Look in the mirror, is he still following me?

    Let it roll down the highway
    Let it roll down the highway
    Roll, roll

    Look at the sign, we're in the wrong place
    Move out boys and let's get ready to race
    Four fifty-four's coming over the hill
    The man on patrol is gonna give us a bill

    The time's real short, you know the distance is long
    I'd like to have a jet but it's not in the song
    Climb back in the cab, cross your fingers for luck
    We gotta keep moving if we're going to make a buck

    Let it roll down the highway
    Let it roll down the highway
    Roll

    Let it roll
    Let it roll
    Let it roll
    Let it roll

    Let it roll down the highway
    Let it roll down the highway
    Roll, roll, roll

    Down the highway
    Let it roll down the highway
    Roll, roll, roll

    Let it roll down the highway
    Let it roll down the highway
    Roll, roll, roll

    Yes. There is 2 verstions of the song. In this thread already. Go back and re-read them & you will then recognize the title: Hot Rod Lincoln.

    Yea, that's what I was replying to... but I guess I was being redundant if you listen to the lyrics.... except that it was an actual car
