I bought a 28 ford Tudor sedan back in April. I've been out of the hot rod seen for 18+ years and I saw this car looking for my fifteen year old a truck. Dad had to have the model a. I've been lurking on here since I got the car and now I'm ready to start posting my stuff. the day I brought home
Welcome! Looks like you have a solid start to nice little car. What are your plans? Keep the banger? Flathead V8? Chop? Lower it?
Once I got it off of the trailer. I was in awe on the craftsmanship of the model a had. I've never been around a model a that was still together from the factory. Up to this point I've built my 69 Camaro that I still have. And helped with a buddies 30 model a that was just a body. And a hand full of mustangs. So the learning curve started
My plans are olds 60's style hot rod. No fenders, lowered with dropped front axle and springs and 9" in the rear with ladder bars and coil overs, with a sbc, I was a Chevy mechanic for a number of years so I have a stock pile of small blocks. I wanted to maybe spend a little time with them before it to late and they are off doing there thing. My father was never into hot rods. And I've always been into racing anything that was powered by a engine. My boys are 13 and 15 and my time with them is flying by.
I've always wanted a open fender car. American graffiti had me hooked on a coupe. I saw this 28 and told the wife I had to have it. As for the wheels is up in the air. At first I still have the old rally steel wheels from my Camaro. Then I picked up a set of 15x8 steel wheels at a swap meet. I'm still looking. If I end up buy brand new wheels I might have to go with the Detroit steel wheels and run 18's on front and 20's on the rear. I'm still far away from that point
Be careful around here with things like huge hoops and rubber band tires. You may get dinged by the traditional police.
I stripped the chassis to box in. Kept reading about welding a twist into the frame if not careful. So I built a table from 2x3 11ga tubing and 2x2 11ga legs then secured it to the floor. It has worked out great
I was filling in all unnecessary holes in the chassis and beginning to box in the frame. I bought a tig welder to weld the plate to the frame but realized I'm a better mig welder than tig welder
Keep at it, by the time you have all that boxing done you'll be much better a TIG than you are now. The guy who refined my TIG skills always told me I needed "more mileage" he was right.
The tudors are great if you have kids that still hang out with us old guys, We go a lot of places with our late twenties year old kids, that is why I wanted something with a back seat.
LOL no one ever wants to go any place with us I wanted a sedan so I could stuff the engine farther into the cowl. @Eric N neat project, looks real solid wish I was staring with something that solid. Welcome aboard mate.
Motor room is not really a problem it is set back for other reasons. Actually I am building a bulkhead out of my stock back seat frame and my reserve tank and battery are going in it then it will be flat on top so my dog has a place to lay. I won't be sitting all the way in the back seat I am just loosing two cylinders into the cowl. Too much for leg room in a coupe but a minor shift in the seats will leave room in the back and I'll still have leg room. OK now I have hijacked the thread sorry about that.
I've been working on this since about May. So I have a bunch of photos to post on this build Z ing the rear to allow me to lower the frame further down in the rear the pictures are fussy sorry about that. I kicked it up about 5"
I also found so Sanderson headers off of craigslist for $150. Not what I originally wanted but the price was right
My plans is to get it on the road spring time and then winter 2016 bring it back in the garage for a 3-4 inch chop will see how the summer goes and finish the body for a quality paint job
Great Project, keep us posted. I suggest you chop it now if that's the plan anyhow. It will only add day or two to your build at this stage. Much more effort required next winter.
LOL looks like you'll need to shorten those headers up about a foot so you don't hit gas pumps and little kids on the sidewalk with 'em. Like the direction this is headed. looks like you got a pretty good handle on it.
a couple of pictures that my wife just sent me. My son hanging out with me when we first got the model a.
