Great ride-along ! At about a minute and a half in, when you stood on it, even I felt like a 16 year-old again, ha-ha. Sounds so great even the dog was cheering you on . Damn, I need a flattie-powered ride !!

Great video. Sounds killer. What happened to all the leaves on the trees?

  4. Everybody does! :) The sound of a big cammed flathead with compression and a light flywheel - pretty much created the drive-in "sound" we all cherish . . .

  7. Very cool, I enjoyed the ride. Thanks for posting the video. :)

  8. Boy you sure have it right as to all the hard work and those steps backwards, plus all the shit that does not fit or work like it should and the endless $$$$$ we seem to pump into getting it on the road.
I loved the ride along and your flat motor sounds great.
Can't wait to get the 3 window at that stage so I can do the first ride also. Should have it ready for spring.

    Really try,

I mean you got all winter to fix it.

  23. I know exactly what will go first . . . the early 32 rear end (like a Model A - no pinion support)!

I'm building a "bullet-proofed" (as much as you can) Columbia this winter - with a 33-34 case (has pinion support). All the main Columbia parts have been redone out of 8620 steel, and it will have 28 spline late axles (still using early drums). It won't be strong like a 9", but hopefully it will be strong enough.

There is nothing like that first ride, thanks for letting me come along.

  27. Hey HAMB Gang - thanks for all the positive comments and "Atta boys" . . . much appreciated. It is funny, that at 56 years old, it is hotrod experiences like this that are timeless to me.

I feel like I'm 16 years old - when I first started my first full-race flathead that I built - with the mentoring of Joe Reath in Long Beach, CA (also a 284 incher). Anyway, I had a Harman Collins dual coil ignition on it - didn't know that the plug wiring was different than stock (which means a lot of plug wires were in the wrong spots) . . . had a huge backfire and the frickin oil dipstick blew out of the pan and hit my Mom in the chest! (She was always helping me on my hotrod projects - still does!) Could have knocked her eyeballs out with a stick! I got to laughing so hard afterwards . . . she was not amused. I just knew that something was seriously wrong with the firing order . . . needed to figure it out.

So I sat down with the distributor and figured out that the rotor jumped back and forth (has two contacts) - so the firing order had to totally change from the stock cap. Only later did I find out that HC shipped a re-marked cap with their units (which I didn't have). Problem solving teaches you a lot of things!

This Week: The good news is that I called Mom about the new engine startup (she really wished she was here - loves this stuff) and let her know that I've been saving that chrome flathead dipstick all these years . . . and 'Yes' it has gone into this 42 Merc motor!

Here is Mom with the FlatCad crew at Bonneville in 2013 . . . last year we had salt to run. She looks and lives her life pretty damn good . . . she's a young 82!
