    Excuse my lack of knowledge...

Say a body panel is 18 gauge, can you use 16 gauge to patch it or is that asking for trouble?

I find most vintage cars to be around 19 gauge, I use 18 for patches on them. 16 is pretty heavy for body repairs unless for structural.

Use 18 gauge !!! You will be much happier with your welds. Mis-matched gauge will result in uneven heating of your metal and can produce some "Funky Welds". When you metal finish your welds, you will find that mis-matched gauge will be a "PITA" to hammer and dolly............. Jeff

  4. It can be done but metal is sold by the pound. 16 gauge weighs more then 18 gauge. ;)

  5. 16 gauge is harder to work with. HRP

  6. stick with 18 gauge , it's closest to most cars original thickness and is easier to tweak
