Hey Gang,
Does anyone know a reputable chromer? One that you would recommend and their shit doesn't discolor or flake off in 6mo.?

Depends on where you live too. Here in Florida, I like Gulf Plating in Lauderdale. Before them I used Action Plating in Opa Locka, and theirs discolored pretty fast, but the stuff from Gulf Plating is very high quality.

Advanced Plating or John Wright.
I have first-hand experience with Advanced and was *very* pleased with their work- both chrome plating and powder coating.
That said, you get what you pay for...

 

Everybody brags on Advanced Plating, but nobody is perfect. Several years ago, I bought my '31 Brookville roadster as an uncompleted project form a friend who lost interest in it. Between the time it sat in his garage between trips towing it to swap meets trying to sell it, and the several years it took for my wore out old ass to finish it , I suspect it's 20 years since Brookville built the body and set it on the Pete & Jake frame built up to a rolling chassis to the customer's specs. And among the specified parts was a Magnum dropped, drilled, and chromed front axle.
Before I ever got the car on the road, the chrome started peeling, outer layer only, still sorta silvery, copper look where it peeled, near the pass. side spring perch boss.
Called P&J and talked to them, and they were nice as could be about it, but took a position that since I wasn't the original buyer they couldn't do anything but offer to get Advanced )Plating to re- plate after stripping, at their volume rate discount. And I agree with their position on me not being original buyer. So far I haven't done anything about it but drive it, as I'm not sure if I want to rechrome this axle or go with a dropped tubular axle.
I,m not complaining, just commenting that nobody's perfect. Spent almost 24 years in an aircraft repair facility for major airline where many parts were plated to build up for remachining to dimension, and once in awhile a part would peel during machininig back to dimension. Then you strip, replate, and machine again.

Located in East Hartford, CT. Talked to one of the owners at the Lake Compounce swap meet. He seemed to know what he was talking about, had some examples of his work, which looked very nice. They'll do a nice quality driver chrome bumper for $550.

Looks to me like "Chrome Plater Josh" doesn't do this anymore.

 

Is there any in the Phoenix, AZ area?

 

We've used these guys as well at our shop (vintage British car restoration) , and have always been very happy with the price, turnaround, and quality.

 

I used Bills Chrone in Jennette, PA. Very pleased and he guarantees his work for life time. Not cheap but excellent work.

Well Chris, I have installed a C4 automatic in my 26 RPU. Why ? because there is no room for a clutch. It could probably be done however I also have a bad left hip and driving a standard for any length of time causes a good deal of pain.
I may need a hip replacement later in life but I'm trying to avoid that.
So, I love my automatics for good reason.
On the flip side any drag racer worth his salt knows that an automatic is faster.
Do you take any of that into account in your opinion on "slushboxes" ?
We all have different things that affect our lives.

Agreed on all counts.

I know that anyone racing wants an automatic...you can't miss a shift if the tranny does it for you.

I'm almost 50, and almost everything hurts, so I get why a lot of guys don't want the 3rd pedal, especially with a bad back or hip.

But I also think that anything "traditional" should be a stick, but that's just me.

At the end of the day, you build what you want, drive what's most comfortable.

That's great, because that's what I am doing. I have no illusions that my RPU will be a comfortable ride, but I want it to be fun and as minimally painful as possible
