So I have a question about gasoline. The gas these days doesn't seem as good to me as it did ten years ago. I put some gas in my portable welder. ( I know it's off topic but this happens in old cars) But after a month and a half it seems to go bad. Now I put some sea foam in with it and I may have added to much but the last time I used it it would not pick up rpms and if it did would fall on its face soon as you struck an arch. I drained as much fuel out as I could and put some fresh in. It seemed to run better. I drained the fuel out again and I noticed that it had a redish tint to it. So is there a decent answer out there on products that help ad life to fuel? And any tips on how to store gas in a tank for a period of a month or two? I am wondering if you got alcohol free gas if it would help? Hopefully someday I have enough business that I don't have to worry so much about it. Thanks Brian

drain it and run it dry, then refill when it's time to use it again.

Alcohol free gas should not absorb water like gasahol does.

  3. first , clean out the carburetor and then use nothing but ethanol free fuel

add a fuel shutoff valve in the fuel line so you can run the carburetor dry. put a bit of sta-bil in the tank , run the engine so it gets into the carb , then shut the valve and run it dry. i do this on all my small engine powered equipment and i have absolutely no fuel related problems

  4. They have eliminated your ability to store or stockpile fuel.
It's just one small part of a huge conspiracy.

Ethanol free fuel isn't available everywhere.

basically there is no where in Illinois to get alcohol free gas as we are a air quality state and if your with in 150 miles of a city that has a population of more than 100,000 then the gas is going to have alcohol in it FED EPA mandate so Chicago takes the north half and st louis covers the southern half , there is only one taxabel gas that does not have it and thats BP gold as they use a different oxygent in there product so they do not need it ) and it will store for up to a year without varnishing .
but to store 90-10 Gold eagle makes a stabil product just for it and it works . the shelf life of 90-10 is 120 days . I have it stored in several machines with the stabil for up to a year without problems ,

But like squirell said the easiest way to prevent the problems is to drain it out but then you need to run a conditioner thru the carb as the gas will make crystals from the alcohol , thats were the seafoam comes in . make up about a cup of gas with some in it and run it thru till it runs dry or get some top end lube like we use for alcohol dragsters and use that , as for the red ting in the gas , thats from the refinery detergents oxidizing , more than likely the magnese

Aviation fuel has to keep up to 5 years in storage, we use AV100LL (100 octane low lead) in our equipment that sits with good luck. I use it in my high compression engines and have noticed very few fuel system problems compared to my other stuff.

  7. the local mower shops are suggesting mixing the aviation gas 10% in pump fuel to avoid problems storing equipment over the winter.

Visit www.pure-gas.org/index.jsp to find ethanol-free gas stations by state.
I like Iowa but I wish they'd keep their corn squeezins out of my gas!

    31Vicky with a Hemi - I'm surprised there aren't any ethanol-free stations in Cleveland!

  10. Some guys use Staybill (sp), I don't seem to have much problem or as much as other fellas do. I have run some pretty skunky gas in my lower performance motors, like my lawn mower for example that actually stinks when it is running. That is usually gas left setting for a year or so.

That fuel index that everyone talks about if not kept up to date. For the longest time for example it showed the only stations in KC that had alcohol free gasoline were one a marina (that would not sell gasoline for automobiles) and the other in mid town the same one that had E-85, it had been boarded up for years (even before E-85).

Doesn't hurt to check it but don't expect it to be accurate.

The problem with alcohol in fuel is called phase separation. This is an unavoidable process. It is like the separation of oil and vinegar salad dressing. There are no fuel treatments that can prevent this. It is a product of the stupid policy of putting food in our fuel tanks.

  12. Funny aint it?
A few marinas have some low octane junk corn free. Great for mower. There was a station not far from me that dropped their 100 octane cam2 and uses the tank for E85 now. Ughhh.
I can find 110 but I don't like it, its too high rating and full of lead.

Had some of that shit gas destroy a brand new fuel system. It sat for a few years, but new parts pump tank lines destroyed.

I use 100% gas in my truck, cars, and mower. The gas that I leave in the mower this winter will start and run fine next spring, and won't evaporate like the mixed shit does. Lot of treehuggers around here, but the 100% gas station in town sells a lot of gas, usually at about 30-40 cents more a gallon than the gasohol stuff.

  14. LOL the only corn free gasoline around here is premium and you get it of all places at the gas station owned by the local HY Vee grocery stores. Not a problem for me, my old stuff all runs real well on 93 octane gasoline. :D

The down side is that I do a lot of my cruising out on the highway and there are not many places that are easy to find out on the road that uses vegetable free gasoline. :D

I have 3 stations here that sell ethanol-free, 2 within a mile of my house and 1 close by where I work 8 miles from home. All 3 sell it as 91 octane and I get better fuel mileage with it. I think the reason we have it around here is because I live near a sizable lake and I understand that boats have issues with the phase separation and the water that the alcohol draws.

every time I mention the Illinois ethanol act someone post that site or the historic vehicle site or pure gas .com
most of the stations the owners forget to put the labels on the pump them when they change a cover or have them pressure washed ( IEPA is the ones who enforce it and there are few inspectors , dept of Ag does the pump calibrations for taxes )
and I have seen several stations listed and unlisted here in town because a sticker was missing and we are in the 6 county district , (Will county ) and people assume its non ethanol since no sticker ( but the other side of the pump has one  ) .
I know from hauling the stuff ( off and on for 20 years Gas , Diesel , USCG marine oils , Avgas and Jet A and petroleum products ) , I have a book of MSD's from different suppliers and terminals ( I go 250 miles out from the lemont refinery area ) , and when you load you have to put in the destination number as thats how they tax the station and you cannot redirect the load ,
the only gas products I know of that Do not have ethanol in Illinois are BP gold as it uses Tame or ISo -octane or Shell V-power 93 ( ETBE or TAme )
and all the FS fuels are e-10 and there diesel is B-10 ( they are owned by farmers and support bio fuels ) Fs ( fast stop ) is Farm Service Growmark , I know they do sell non E 87 in some other states .

most of the airports will no longer sell to you unless they have a pilots license and tail number ( DHS wants to keep tabs on it ) , I know the Joliet airport will not sell unless your in a plane as the truck and pumps are in a restricted area ( DHS ) and racing gas is easier and cheaper around here since they opened the dragstrip .
the marinas I delivered to the pumps were on the shore and they only serviced boats and it was Almost .50 a gallon more expensive and it was a Bulk terminal no name E-10 gas with a additive ( generic stabil or valvetech usually added at the drop ) as they have a high turn over rate in fuel and ussually only take 1000-2500 gallons and get daily deliveries in the summer ( bobtail deliverys ) . mostly only the big boats ( cigarettes) or old cabin cruisers fuel at the marinas as most pull there boats and take them home and fuel up at the gas station on the way in or out .

For small engines (or, big wallets) one alternative to the fuel lottery and stabilizers is to use naptha, commonly known as Coleman fuel. It is used for stoves and lanterns and doesn't sour or turn to gum/varnish. It lasts 20 years in stoves at least, with maybe a little reduction in output.

Octane is about 50. It works fine too, in two stroke lawnmowers in a pinch. Note this is not for regular use, but for storage/emergency or overwinter purpose.

I had heard once it was used by rescue squads in certain equipment that lays idle much of the time but has to start first time every time, like the "jaws of life". Don't know if that's true but it stands to reason. Should be about perfect for anything over the winter that is neglected, and portable generators, etc.

  18. I don't know how much difference there is between countries, but our gas is red, or pink in color.
I notice it turns clear in my filter after around an hour in the sun. I can only guess the sun bleaches the dye outer it. Everyone I've asked about this, has no idea.
We do have varnish issues, after sitting for a while to. I need to find out how long I can leave this stuff in my tank, as the Hudson is off the road at present for maintaince.

Sta-Bil does seem to work, and is available "in stores everywhere". I use a product called PRI-G that may be better, I dunno. Keep the tank full and out of the sun seems to help.

    And drive the damn thing!

  21. I use the Marine stable, suppose to be better, and I mix in a little Sea-Foam, I am using this mix in all cars bikes and small engines, and so far so good, about 3 years now.

I use stabil as I used to deliver to them and they gave me a box of the stuff and it works well , and the secret chemical is something realitively simple as I met the guy who delivers it ( its food grade )

seafoam you have to be carefull as it contains alcohol , not ethanol but Isopranopol /Isopropyl ( rubbing alcohol ) and will mix with water like ethanol . but sea foam is a detergent package , they have a packing plant in MIlwaukee . I used to think it was snake oil till I was given a sample pack , and tried it , it cleaned up several gummed up motors .

as for getting non alcohol fuel ( tru fuel ) , my local big box store sells it in quart cans for chainsaws and weed wackers , its $24 a gallon ( 5.98 a quart ) not the pre mix either !.

coleman fuel otherwise know to some people as whitegas , is naptha works great but has a octane number of 55-57 , we used to use it to cut gas and diesel fuel ( cuts the wax to prevent clouding or jelling in #2 ) and fires up quick in cold low compression tractors .( like a AC wd 45 with a HC head ( 5.75:1 ) for a old L head Briggs, Tecumsche , with low compresion ratios it would be ok to use with a little gas to up the octane , but with the NEw OHV motors with a higher compression ratio of 8.5:1 I would use 87 octane gas .
