Check out this 540 H.P. Ford Y block from this years Engine Masters Challenge. http://www.hotrod.com/events/1510-hot-rodded-ford-y-block-pumps-out-540hp/
Is their any Ford John Kasse can't build? http://www.hotrod.com/events/1510-jon-kaases-insanely-customized-ford-y-block-makes-nearly-600-hp/
Yes I read the comments. and I agree with most of them. Spend the same dollars on just about any engine and you will have more hp & torque than a Y block Boat anchor. Y blocks and V6 GMC,s are not good designs to try and soup up.
Funny, as soon as I saw "old wolf", I knew "boat anchor" would be in the mix. C'mon dude, just let us Y blockheads have our fun
Yep those Y blocks are almost as good as a 348 or 409 chevy. At least the Y block wouldn't have cracked heads. At present I have a few Y blocks. A complete 292 from a 58 car a 61 truck engine that has a burnt piston. a 56 short block that's bored .040. and a 56 272 block with a fresh rebore to the 292 bore size. and a 55 truck engine that's between a 54 239 and a 272. I believe its a 256? I also have some extra cyl heads and the desirable square flange holley intakes. Its not like I haven't owned and worked on them. I don't know why I have kept them? The core buyer in Chicago is now buying Y blocks maybe I sell them to him?
Awesome numbers. I've lusted after y-blocks since I was a kid in the 60s, and the hoodlums up the street had a buddy with a Y in his 55-56 hardtop. Loved the sound of it when he raised hell up and down the street. Still do, might be why I have 6 of them laying around, waiting their turn.
Ted Eaton recently built a 292 for a customer that made a little over 1 HP per cubic inch with unported 113 heads and the iron ECZ-B intake. Granted it's no 500+ HP mouse motor, but I think it's still respectable and would move a light car around just fine. It made 300+ LB/FT from 2700 to 5400 RPM and peak HP was 314 @ 5800. I liked his recipe on this one and it was less money than a 348/409 or an early hemi. -Dave
