  3. Thanks for catching that.

  4. Had breakfast at Mr. "D"s in Kingman and hit the road, the stretch between Kingman through Oatman in to Needles is fun to drive. Very steep and lots of hair pin curves.

  5. More, the road winds through some pretty rugged terrain.

  6. Hot in Needles. Took a picture of the old 66 bridge across the Colorado River. Could not get close to it, the whole area was posted no trespassing.

  7. Much of the National Trails Highway (RT66) from Needles to Barstow had been damaged by flooding so we spent more time on I 40 than we normally like to.

    Mike ,
What a great time you both seemed to have . In two weeks we are flying to phoenix and the wife and I are renting a Harley for 8 days to see as much of rt.66 as we can .
We are hopefully going to see the Grand canyon , the Painted Dessert , the Petrified Forest and more . we will be renting several cabins throughout Arizona and I still have the booking to do , so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated .
Most of the cabins are located in Coconino , Pine , Pinetop-Lakeside , Sedona , and possibly Parks.
    Thanks again .

P.S. Anyone who has any suggestions ,weather it be junkyards , bbq , sight seeing , please don't hold back !
P.S.S. We were also thinking of heading out to Needles , and that area .

  10. I'm going to save that and the Redwoods for another road trip, possibly after I fix the Cadillac. We have seen so much so far that it's hard to keep it all straight.

  11. There are a lot of rented bike tours in the areas you mentioned, we see them at every stop we make. The restaurants and motels treat them well and all have guides that take them to all the attractions. Needles is going to be hot no matter when you go, the road we were on yesterday would be a blast on a bike, just keep an eye peeled for the small attractions like Shaffer fish bowl springs. they are hard to spot on twisty roads.

  12. Vinmanr2d2...if your going to be in Phoenix on Saturday the 10th, you've gotta catch the Central cruise and show. Then late afternoon/early evening head over to the Pavilions in Scottsdale...it's every Saturday. I never miss it when we're in Phoenix.
Those are more great pics, Mike, thanks again.

  13. We are done. The actual end of 66 is at Olympic Blvd. is just an intersection so we made our way over o the Santa Monica Pier the alternate end of the route .

  18. I 15 was insane, especially Cajon Pass, about halfway down the LA side there is a short stretch of 66 where two alignments run side by side along the rail road grade called the Blue cut. Very pretty and wide, would be a great place to take a nap or camp for the night.

I haven't driven much of 66 but did do that Oatman section. I couldn't figure out why they took the road thru the hills like that instead of using the flat desert floor. Maybe it was the mining.

  20. The directions in the book got confusing when we got back on I 15, the interchange he talks about has been re constructed, but as soon as you can exit to Foot Hills Blvd. It's a nice drive in to LA.

  22. I think you might be right.

  23. A little side note: When you turn off Foot Hills on to Sunset Blvd. take a tranquilizer, when you turn on to Santa Monica give your wife two pills. Becky took a white knuckle ride to the pier. I raced asphalt circle track back in the early 70s, coming from the back of the pack in a 75 lap main is how I"d describe that drive.

  24. After the pier we took off up the coast highway to 101through Malibu then took a short cut got lost and ended up for the night in a nice little town called Solvang. It was a great road trip , thank you guys for coming along.

Best Rt66 trip thread ever. I enjoyed every stop with you. Can you tell me how many days from the start in Illinois until you reached the pier? Is there anything you would have done differently as far as your pace? I would love to do this trip and would appreciate any input on whether you could have improved your experience.
Thanks for taking us along,it was fascinating.

  27. Solvang ain't a bad place to end up at after getting lost. That was a favorite Sunday drive from Orange County back in the 70's. LOL...bet you were glad you didn't have the Caddy when you hit LA.
