I have just learned that Hubert Platt (The G, an icon of "Southern-style" match racing, is in failing health and has been moved to hospice care. Please pray for he and his family. This hurts.
So sad, I have video of him matchracing the rumchasers in '66 in that Falcon of his, You see both sides of the car on every 3/4 shift, ever since I saw that, he rated "hero", or at least "plum crazy" in my books. He was "hell on wheels". You are in my thoughts Hugh.
Sad to hear. A Few years ago I took my motorcycle to a an older guy (mid 70's) for a tune up. I walked into his garage, and there sat an old Charger with a Hemi/4sp. and photos of drag racings best of times. One of the pics was of him, a Falcon, and Hubert Platt., "Hubie" as he called him. Turns out he was Hubert's tuner back in the day. He claimed he knew all the racers, and tuned for a few. He loved to tell stories about his times.
Met him at the Dawsonville, GA, Moonshine Festival a couple of years ago, with the Falcon. Instant flashback to see him match race at Thunderbolt Dragstrip in Jacksonville in the 60's. He was the real deal. Condolences to his family and friends.
Just heard the news that he's gone. DAMN! May the spirit of Hubert Platt forever soar with the angels!
I was in Atlanta in the 90s on assignment for a while. Went to a rod run at the drive-in and saw Hubert and his car. My condolences to the family and may the Good Lord give Hubert unlimited passes on the drag strip in the sky!
Hubert enjoyed his 80+ years of life as well as anyone I have ever known. And he enjoyed sharing stories that he fondly remembered.....and a few not so fondly. I will miss seeing him at the shows. R.I.P.
I remember reading about Hubert in the 60's, with him being a Ford racer made him special to me. This short video opens and closes with Hubert, it's a great one to watch. RIP Mr Platt.
