I'm thinking of putting some finned aluminium drums on my 58 Buick Special, the Special was the cheaper model made in 58 and the only one with cast iron drums as standard. Does anybody know if any of the later finned Buick drums from the 62-66 models will fit the 58?
If I remember correctly, the earlier cars had ball bearings, and the later had tapered roller bearings. Not sure where the changeover was.
The big thing will be to get the Roadmaster backing plates, to allow 2.5 inches of shoe and drum width. The aluminum drum should fit right onto your stock hub. You will need, however, the longer lug bolts. I did this on my '54 Super, and it made a very nice upgrade.
The backing backing plates on your 58 are the same as the backing plates on the 58-60 with the finned drums. I think you are going to need to find drums that were on a 58-60 buicks.
Good used ones are out there. I think starting in 61 the bearings changed and so did the wheel studs, lugs. 58-60 had lugs and 61 and up had studs I think.
