Event Coverage Road trip on Rout 66

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Mike Miller, Sep 7, 2015.

  1. Ended up in Lincoln Nebraska at Speedy Bills museum of speed, it's huge. If you show them a receipt for some parts you bought there's no admission charge so for $221.00 we got in free:D. I'm too tired to post a lot of pictures tonight. Hope to connect with RT 66 Tomorrow in Illinois.
Passed this place along the way. Utica Bills.

  2. Went through all 3 floors of Speedy Bills Museum Yesterday, it's huge. In Joliet Il. now. Drove on US 30 from Idaho thru Nebraska and Ohio, lots of history and got to see the things I had to pass by in 1966. We start the trip back on RT. 66 tomorrow. Here's some but not all of the pictures I took at Speedy Bills. I was impressed by the collection of engines he had. 5. One of my favorites. This was a barn find at an auction that bill was bidding on, he did not win the bid but when the owner asked the winner what he was going to do with it the guy said he was going to unload the car and restore it, he turned to bill and asked him what he would have done with it and Bill said, nothing, I'm going to display it as is. The owner said "you get the car". Seems the car had not been unloaded since it was put in the barn in the early 40s.

    Hi Mike

Are those heads Lycoming or some type of aircraft engine, and is that V 16 a Chevy factory one off as it looks like small block parts

Did you get a chance to check out the Nethercutt Museum & Collection, as it would be well worth your time to see his stuff

Just need to call ahead to get on the tour list for the Museum 818 367 2251

You can walk in from 9 to 5 to see the cars in the new one story building right across from the 5 story Museum building

    Enjoy , Don

This is a great trip, sorry about the Cad. I don't understand what you are calling the Lincoln Highway. It ran from New York City to San Francisco. From Utah through Nevada and California it is both I80 and Highway 50 because of different alignments. The highway number system segmented into pieces of several modern roads. One long piece entering Nevada from Utah is still dirt.
I've been the whole way on 66 from Chicago the Huntington beach Pier before there was an I40. It was not all in one trip though. The Big Texan in Amarillo is a kick. I don't know if the stretch from Gofs through Amboy and to Barstow is still drivable. It was really rough and not maintained the last time I was on it in 2002. As with the Lincoln Highway 66 had several alignments. It is possible to find one old piece they runs from Glenrio on the Texas/New Mexico border to Santa Rosa New Mexico. Part of it now is a two track dirt road.
Thanks for taking us on your trip!

  8. Thanks Six Ball. There's a lot to explore in America and so far Becky and I have had a great time. Generally US 30 follows one alignment of the Lincoln Highway from about Salt Lake City on and is labeled as such on maps and sign posts along the rout I've taken. True the original road which was a bunch of interconnected dirt and gravel tracks maintained by local business folks until 1920 when the federal government took responsibility for Americas highways went from Time Square NY to Lincoln park in SF Ca. There is an association not unlike the Rt.66 Association that is dedicated to the Lincoln Highway. Here's a link to their page. There is a link to an interactive map of the whole road. My interest was in the roads I traveled in my younger days.

The old route around here is well marked, but not very direct. It's a collection of County roads, and city streets through Tama, and the famous bridge is on 5th ST right in town. I didn't realize until a few years ago when they put up the signs that I live right on the route!
You're sure seeing a lot of great stuff!

  12. Thanks.
We are in Normal for the night. Getting back to 66 when I take a side trip is a pain, the rout is well marked but a lot of streets aren't. Getting back out of Pontiac after visiting the museum complex was hard for me as I have the worst internal compass ever. I'm sure the locals hope they never see another Oregon plate ever.

  13. Some of todays pictures. My laundry was making the car smell like a goat barn so a stop for some domestic chores was a necessity.
DSCF2864.JPG DSCF2865.JPG Then back on the road.

In the fall of 1957 my dad, my big brother, and I went from Texas to Crystal Lake, Illinois in a 1953 F100 to pick up a grain dryer for an elevator between Canyon and Happy ,Texas where my dad ran a shop and Buddy Knox's dad, Lester, ran a gas station. We went to Meramec Caverns which were interesting because they were said to be a hideout of the James gang. They were a let down having already been to Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico. Visit all other caves before you go to Carlsbad. They are just holes in the ground.:)

  19. Was in Nampa Museum 3 weeks ago. Best $5 spent in a long time. Sorry about the Cad. Enjoy the drive.

  20. Went to the Davis Mansion in Bloomington this mourning, nice but not my cup of tea. Hit the road through a few small towns, that's what I enjoy. Seeing the old streets and houses. Looked at some of the more touristy attractions along the way and ended up in Litchfield . Atlanta was a fun stop, saw a statue with a big wiener
    DSCF2905.JPG
and heard the clock tower chime twelve o clock. That reminded me of the Cozy Dog drive in and the original corn dog.
    DSCF2914.JPG
We had already had lunch but who could not stop for a corn dog at it's point of origin.
66 here is a frontage road and unless you are in to Abe Lincoln there's no reason to stop at some places. As I said I'm more interested in the small towns and people's collections of stuff. I spotted a shed full of older Motorcycles behind the Motel that I'll go check out tomorrow.

  30. Okay. I'm over being jealous.
I really am enjoying the pic's. Those "before" and "After" '56 Ford Crown Vic's reminded me of two '56 Ford models I built as a kid.
    Wait a minute... no... I'm still jealous!:D
