Hot Rods 32 Roadster Body - a new approach. AKA Beetledeuce

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by english gent, Sep 30, 2014.

  1. As well .... before you go .... put some fenders on it ... and a track nose ... maybe a grille insert and boat style split windscreen .... and ummmmm, well ... no sense in leaving any Vee Dub parts behind. Idle hands and all .... probably take ya' until Sunday for that punch list.

I've got this crazy idea of using rear side windows from a big for a Duvall style wind shield.
But I don't have any or the skills to cast a frame.
Maybe that stuff you mold can be a basic frame of U-channel
And it would fit the style of this build.

Funnily enough I'd had similar thoughts about casting a Duval type frame, although I hadn't thought about the Bug rear windows. Trouble is I am limited to the size of pieces I can cast using this method. It may end up using too many pieces.

I just re-discovered this build. Now I have to find a VW, or maybe NOT! Anyway, the patience and dedication resulted in a body that is the very essence of hotrodding. Cheers M8.

Keep in mind that side and back windows are tempered and not laminated. Not suited for windshields.

40 procent of all top restored vw bug with a flat windshield are tempered, not laminated.
To the best of my knowledge all flat windshields are born tempered.
I bet there is a lot of windshields out there that's tempered, and with modern foil it becomes a shit load of safer.

Just make a pattern and take it to an automotive glass shop. Flat laminated glass isn't expensive and well worth the peace of mind.

    EG,
You my friend put the IM in IMAGINATION!
You have shown many that a dream can be achieved by sheer determination.
The Bug Guys are gonna get scared when they see a Hot Rodder sizing up their sheet metal for their next "Folkswagen Deuce" build.
You Sir definitely Kicked some cajonies with this build. Congrats, will look in on the build as it continues.

A grinder and a mig welder. A lot of imagination, thinking out of the box. Your vision was pretty far out but you knocked it out of the park. Awesome

What's the wheelbase of a real Deuce?
I can tell you the measurement from the centre of my rear axle to the firewall. I don't know the typical measurement from the firewall to the front axle.

  24. That's a euro thing; laminated windshields are required here, no tempered front glass allowed. Just like rear windows are required to be tempered here.

Man, What could you have done if you had tools and skill? Would it be a transformer that could change back to a VW?

Over here its only allowed on cars title as vintage and cars build before 1976

But yes tempered is a good ideer, but I find it far more likely to be hit by a stone in the face then have you windshield busted. Further more if it's a Brookland screen or a small Duvall, I think it's the lack of size that is dangerous not the glass type.

    I love the progress EG

I have a measurement of approx. 66 inches from rear axle to firewall. What would be a good distance from firewall to front axle?

That is in Model Y range which has a 93" wheelbase. But pick your engine first.
