Just looking to see what everyones done as far as the timbers or other ideas for stepside tubs. Im planning on putting about a 100L truck fueltank in under the back window too so if anyone has any similar pictures would be keen to see them thanks
Maybe something got lost in the translation. What is it you are talking about? A tub is normally an old phaeton but I guess that you are talking about a truck of some sort?
He wants pictures of "in the bed gas tanks" likely for that 63 flareside. I prefer the stock location...behind the seat in the cab.
Exactly really dod not expect that to be so misunderstood but anyway. Not only the tank but the whole rear. Anything that people have done different im thinking of putting milled railway sleepers in for the timbers in the back.
I creepy feeling inside me makes me think he wants to replace the box with wood railway sleepers. From the avatar pic I assume it already has a fuel tank. IMHO pickups have a box and fenders. And maybe a push bar in front for the race car.
Most rail car floors I have seen are 2 1/2 to 3 inch thickness. In my opinion that's too heavy for a flareside/stepside bed. It would be good for a stake body but too heavy IMHO for a pickup. Now rail car wood may be thinner these days as the cars I have seen were in museums. 3/4 to 1 inch thick boards would be perfect. As far as the tank...Personally I do not like in the bed tanks. The stock location is my first choice with under the bed being my second choice.
He's not talking about rail car wood, he's talking about sleepers, the big hunks of wood the tracks sit on.
The pic above me ...not RR ties, look like 4x12's....least as we know them in the States. The stack of of ties is what I've always seen. Not my first, or even 50th choice for bed wood.
I can assure you sir that those are old railway sleepers...what you call ties. Here are some more. Notice the holes?
Spot on We use them all the time at work For retaining walls. Theres a few places that mill them down for interior feature walls i think the newer sleepers are worse than the old ones but i could be wrong id be milling them down to about 15-20mm thick so the hold down strips will actually work.
This is what they look like milled. These particular ones were used on the door of a horse arena. This is what gave me the idea of maybe doin it in the back of the f-truck
Well this was interesting and funny too. The world has so many names for the same thing. For awhile the railroads were using concrete tie , now that would get that f-truck LOW
Seems like a lot of work for something one can do with stain and varnish on conventional timber. Now if you want to be really unique try to get the aluminum flooring from a wrecked trailer or box truck (don't know what you call em in Oz) and lay those down. They're extruded and have a cleated surface, they interlock, clamp together on the bottom. Just sayin, but if the sleepers and milling is free or dirt cheap what's it matter, right?
Yeah can just about get away with doin it for nothing. But what you suggested with the aluminium sounds interesting I just wanted to do somethin a little bit different.
