Not even stupid. Road trips are ALL GOOD. Maybe some better than others.

Back in the eighties, before the new Mission was built, a couple of times a year, a group of us would caravan down to SIR. It was only a couple hundred miles, but all of us were pulling at LEAST 4.10s, most were 4.5's or 4.88s, we were all a bunch of young turks, we would take turns squaring off from a 50 mph roll on the I-5, usually go up to around 110 if there wasn't much traffic. Then you'd lift and slow down and change lanes, another pair would pull ahead and do the same thing...

This looks like a great trip and related story.
Best of luck to you and your son, Jim!
May require extra popcorn as the week progresses, as I am looking forward to many interesting reports!
Again, be safe and have FUN.

    Speaking of stupid (fun) trips.
Hey George, did you get to the 79 Fall Nationals at SIR.
IIRC, there had been some kind of a snafu(driver strike maybe)with beer distribution in BC, man were those guys making up for lost time.
We all were camping near the entrance to the track and those crazy Canucks had
brought a big old bathtub full of beer on ice, boy did I drink a load of free beer that weekend.
The rest of the story I'm keeping to myself, but one tip I'll give out is never get drunk and watch the fuel cars run on a hangover..........PAINFUL.

Back in the 70's I ran 5.14 gear. Speed limit was 55 [didn't that suck!] about 3500 rpm and most stuck to it..I don't do interstates unless I have to, prefer to stick to two lane state roads.. .I swapped the 5.14 to 4.11 and Nash 5spd in early eighties (3k @ 60) and then swapped to a 6spd OD in the 90's (2250 @ 60) so now in 6th I have 3.12 final.. Last year and this year I went to Epping, NH and chose to use interstate for less time.and at 3000 rpm (small engine its happy 3k plus) its 80 mph and I get passed like I'm doing 55 ! Here in the center of CT my thermometers read 95/96° today and nowhere near low humidity..I'd rather be in AZ me thinks... ..

Nothing like that down here. I love waching the vids of the good and bad and have seen some committed Ozzies take their cars over. Something both of you definitely will remember for years to come.

Good nostalgia drags Sat. 12 in Havana, Il. about a 100 miles north of St. Louis. A little drag strip out in the country.

THIS! Life time memories for both of you. Good luck and safety on the trip.
How old is the son? If you can swing it, see if one of the strips will let him do a couple of easy runs with you as the co-pilot. That'll make a few more memories.

We need a stupid trips thread. I got a couple...

Squirrel, what kind of fuel mileage you figuring on getting, how big is the tank? Make any tuning changes for highway? At least you got someone to pump the gas. ;) Good luck!

The stupid part is driving a stripped altered wheelbase car (runs around 10.0 at 130 on a good day) all that ways, and then punishing it at the dragstrip 6 days and expecting to drive it home again. The car rides ok, and it handles ok now because we put some radials on it for the long drive. No upholstery, it can get kind of warm in there (I've measured 170+ degrees on the floor/firewall). The 3.00 gears for the trip are nice, and we'll swap in the 4.11s when we get there. It seems to get about 10 mpg on the highway with these gears, which is not much different than I would get towing it.

And if anything breaks or gets wrecked, we're going to do our damnedest to fix it.

Steven is 27. He's been on a few adventures with me already....
