1979... I put a 396 in it, went racing. Apparently my dad showed up one weekend and took some pictures.

I don't have a picture of my first Hot Rod, a 1940 Ford 2 door sedan .... Flat head with flames painted on the cylinder heads, .... after I blew up the flat head I installed a 283 Chevy and 3 speed on the floor.

Here is a picture of me and my '37 Chevy Sedan I built in 1975-6 ..... put a 250 Chevy 6 in it with a Turbo 400 trans, 57 Chevy rear end with 3.55 gears and drove it daily.

  5. My first hot rod that I built with my Dad and one of the ones that I still own today as it was built back in 1994, still running the same flathead and trans, it just proves that if you build them right to start with they will last a life time.
BTW it's on its third set of White walls...

It was in his name until I was around 21, then he signed it over to me. But we treated it like it was mine. Except that it was also my brother's. But my brother moved on to bigger and better things, and I kept the truck.

The first one in the early 70's that I finished and drove was our 1937 Chevy Coupe with a 283 and powerglide.
Converted this one into a rumble seat Coupe and got hooked on the 37 Chevy style. As the family grew, we moved on to a few 37 Sedans, a Panel Truck, a Sedan Delivery and a custom built Kingcab Pickup.

  8. First car, bought the 29 coupe in Aug. 68 for $450, spent the next five months replacing the brakes, kingpins, interior, wiring, top, rebuilding the engine (thanks, J.C. Whitney!) and learning everything I could about Model As. Had to rebuild the trans after hole-shotting a Corvair at a stoplight two blocks from home and lunching the cluster gear. Knew better, did it anyway.

I remember it well--no pic. It is on a cave wall back in Nebraska. '40 Ford coupe, 59AB, 39 tranny, straight pipes, and a hook on the dash to keep the tranny from popping out of second. Found out later it had been a hobby stock car. I blew the motor on the boulevard and sold it on the spot--I was going to go out and buy another coupe. I'm on '40 #5 and just the one coupe. HMMMMM.

    Here's mine circa late 70s/early 80s. It's a 1930 Chevy Coupe. Smallblock with a 4-speed, 1956 Chevy rear and a Corvair independent front suspension.

Although it was a total stocker, this 1954 Ford was my daily driver around the same time when the roads weren't salty. 239 V8/Fordomatic, power steering, power brakes, power windows and power front seat.

My first attempt at building a hot rod probably around 1960, I was 14.
I had very little tools and no knowledge. Never got it finished it wound up running on the dirt track at Tulsa Speedway. Ted\'s first hot rod.jpeg

  14. 1974 Little too young to drive it legally, still have it today.

I tried to buy the car in the storage garage as an unfinished car in 1968. It was finished by someone else. I found it again in 2012, I'm still hoping to buy it. You never forget that 1st love. I bought this yellow/primer 1940 Ford standard 2dr sedan in 1972, built 283, 4-speed & now the current ride built like I would have finished in 1972. 016.JPG Steve1st40.jpg 2015-07-20 02.41.52.jpg 2015-03-06 20.43.05.jpg

  18. Well pictures from my youth are few and far between, actually pictures from my life are few and far between. Never the less the first car that I souped up was a '55 Ford Ranch Wagon, 312 Thunderbird, 3x2 3 speed blah blah blah. That engine later became the engine in my first race car.

I still hold that old wagon pretty dear we had a lot of fun in that car.

Thanks. It was a car I really enjoyed. I painted it, but not the way you'd think.

. This not my first car, its what I had my senior year of high school, had a few cars before this, but thru time pics got lost and I never thought much about pics back then, my mother took these and wish that I had pics of them all from back then. my first Hot Rod was a 29 high boy roadster in 2000, pics in my albums, fairly standard deal, but w/ bazaar paint and tweed interior. Of late, I have a restored stock 51 Buick Roadmaster, 51 Merc mild custom and my off topic third gen Camaro ragtop all original, purchased new. Sold my 32 this spring, last car on my list is a 57 Chev 210 coupe, my first car in 1964, looking, WOW ! Should have bought one years ago, $$$ required is WOW !

Gordon Ross was a real heavy hitter in the early days, had all the best drivers, and ran all over the northeast...a collection of his photos from Ginny Ross appear on facebook on the early stock car sights, and are really nice to see as he always had great equipment. Neat story.
