Hello - I have a 1940 Ford Coupe which I am beginning to restore. I am currently trying to remove the steering column and steering box. I am puzzled by one step. There are two bolts that attach the steering lock to my dash. One is a hex bolt which I have already loosened. The other bolt has a smooth round head (almost like a carriage bolt head). Any suggestions for removing or is there a trick that I am missing?

    Thanks,
    Eric

That round head bolt is an anti theft measure. When they installed the column the head of the bolt was sheared off when tightened. You have to get a vise grip on the thing and work it loose. Lots of liquid wrench for a day or so before attempting this. Good luck--been there a few times myself.

I had to drill out the center of the bolt and use an easy out to get the bolt out. There was not enough of the bolt showing to grab it with vise grips.

The FordBarn is another resource to consider as you proceed with the restoration of your '40 Coupe.

Dak Rat - that worked, thank you. I was lucky, there was just enough surface for the vice grips. After a pretty good hand workout I was able to get it out this morning. Great advice, I appreciate it.

RAF and 4dFord/SC - thank you for your replies as well. My build has a long way to go so many more learning moments ahead for me.

    Thanks,
    Eric
