Hey guys, I just recently acquired a 1993 Ford Mustang Aod . The car only had 49k miles on it, as it was ditched and bent the car out of shape. It sat behind a guys house for years until another guy bought it for the motor to put in his 90s mustang and just wanted to sell of the rest of the car. I got everything I could need for 240. best deal I've found around here with most yards wanting 400+ for 180k mile sat for 10 years units. I'd like to get it set up properly the first time ( or as close to it as possible ) .. looking for advise on verifying the trans is still good, the guy I bought it from did drive the car and wanted me to drive the car but couldnt get enough fuel to the engine to drive it. fuel pump wasn't working corretly. he discounted his price. but he legit tried to get the thing to run. he was going to go pull the pump out of his other car and I told him it wasn't worth all that. I took his word and he said if it doesnt work bring it back and he'd pay me back. I hear he is a stand up good guy from people around so took the gamble. What is your recommendation for Stall converter, Rear Gear Ratio, and any upgrades that I can do to the unit that don't require a rebuild or that will prematurely wear out what i've got. ( i was told a shift kit in a non rebuilt unit would not be a good idea from a rebuilder .. true or false ? ) The truck is a 65 f100, ford 9 rear, ford 302 ( 310 ) fairly healthy. I'll be swapping the edelbrock 500 out for a Quick fuel or Summit carb and probably adding a lokar Tv cable. Open to all advise. Thanks.
in case you wondered. that is rain not trans fluid in the back of the truck. Had a heck of a storm blow in just as we were loading up the trans.
The Lokar TV cable works well, but their setup directions are not the best. Search on the HAMB or online for better instructions on how to set up the TV cable. I don't put anything on Ford's besides Holley's, so I don't know how the Summit carb will work with the Lokar kit. With a 302 and an AOD, I would be looking at a rear end ratio in the 3.9 to 4.3 range, depending on the size of your rear tire. 302's aren't known for being torquey motors (3 inch stroke and all), so you will want to keep the RPM's up a bit and in the cam's sweet spot to get the most out of it. Speaking of cam's. It is really hard to pick a torque converter without knowing the cam specs and how you plan on driving it. Hauler, cruiser, freeway mile eater, 1/4 mile at a time, that sort of thing. I love AOD's. I have put one in every Ford car or Truck I have built with an automatic. Good Luck
Set up the TV cable correctly or the trans could fail quickly. The Lokar cable we got needed a brace so it didn't move at the carb. Trans guy had to add spring at the transmission also.
cam specs.. It's a cruiser mainly. I don't race but I like to run it. http://m.summitracing.com/parts/mel-mtf-1
I did the swap in a '66 F100. I had to cut and raise the trans tunnel about 3". I should have done more as you need to slide it back some to install.
It took some work to fit mine in my 61. on a 2 degree angle to not have to cut the floor. I used a lokar linkage and drove straight to the trans shop and had them adjust the TV cable tension for me
Feder... man. I wish I still had my 390... but it had a crack in the valley... so I built this 302. how difficult was it to get that 390 mated to the aod. I hadn't thought about going 411. or even 389. I have just under 31" tall tires. 30.6" 265 65 17 ... I did a work out of RPM at 70 with 370s and i'd be in the mid 1900rpm range. my engine purs along nicely 1700 to 2300.
I have an AOD behind the 352 FE in my '62 Merc. It is not the easiest adaptation, but there are two ways of doing it. If you have an extra $1k laying around, call up Bendtsens and order an adapter. The problem is it is about an 1.25" thick and moves the trans back that much which can play havoc with tight tunnels. The other option is to cut the bellhousing off and bolt a Cruis-O-Matic bellhousing to the pump with an adapter. This is the route I went, Broader Performance built the trans, torque converter, and did the adaptation. This solves the clearance issues, but a custom torque converter is required. 3.6 gears in the 9 inch and a 29 inch tire produces 2000 happy rpms at 70 mph. Fresh out of the box from Broader
I have an AOD in my 55 bird mated to a yblock with a bendstons adapter. Personally…it's a used trans???? I wouldn't do anything to it for performance until I rebuilt it. Not what you wanted to hear I know but, if you don't like THAT suggestion how about fitting it all in first, then getting most of the bugs out of the install…if it works ok…then do the upgrades. And yes the Lokar shifter is acceptable as is getting the throttle pressure right on. BUT be sure and have the actual pressure tested by someone with a pressure gauge, who knows what they are doing. Otherwise just that throttle linkage stuff is questionable. I found this out the hard way!
Thanks. Your comment mirrors that of one guy that runs a trans shop. No big deal really... I'll be tickled to have some gear back either way. All signs point to it being good. So fingers crossed. The fluid was kinda dark cherry.. Not burnt smelling. All the teeth look good on the exposed splines. And the flex plate is almost flawless. Couple little nicks. But my new c6 one with less than 10 k miles looks worse lol.
I may have missed it in another post, but remember that the early 302 (pre '79?) uses a different balance flywheel than the late (5.0) engine, so you will need to rebalance the AOD flex plate if you have an earlier engine.
I have an AOD in my '54 with the same cam and 4:10 rear gears. If that AOD has sat for several years they can gum up and stick and not upshift so you should at least clean up the valve body and governor it's much easier to do with it out of the truck than in it,Berryman Chem-Tool is a good varnish cutter. You might want to invest in this: http://www.badshoeproductions.com/aod.html You should watch these videos: and If you use an aftermarket shifter you need to use the matching AOD shift lever and that means going into the valve body to swap out the stocker,or if he has the Mustang shifter get it and you won't have to.
I called genie.. Should be able to buy just the parts I need to convert my shifter to the aod. Thanks for the videos. I'll give them a watch. What's your cruise rpm with those 4.10s?what size tire you run?
A friend has a 3.70 Richmond Power Trax rear gear he will sell me for 300 bucks... and came across an open 3.50 for 100. My friend who has the salvage yard is looking to see if he has a 3.70 or how much he would charge to rebuild the 2.75 to a 3.70.
