i wonder if what makes the overhead angle so appealing is it makes the cars look like the toys we had growing up?

Great and inspiring thread. Not a hot rod but here is an overhead view of my 1950 Mercury (and the fins of my 63 Cadillac):

I took this this last weekend at the hotel in Joplin (while we awaited the start of the hamb drags) with this thread in mind.

 

I was thinking the same thing. I don't know how many model cars I built growing up and this was the angle we saw most of the time.

 

These photo's remind me of zooming "Hot Wheels" around on the floor. I always went for the '57 Chevy, while my buddy chose the '70 Camaro (obviously, I was the cool kid). Occasionally, while rippin' through "dead man's curve" we'd lose control, power slide, and end up barrel rolling. The beauty was that no one got killed, the cars suffered only minor scuff marks and nobody had to deal with an insurance agent.

The overhead view was the perspective.
