I have not installed the M/T breathers but I have added others. I would install the gaskets with the breather holes on the upper side of the breather or you are going to breath oil and not crankcase air. I usually drill holes slightly smaller than the gasket breather holes, you don't have to slot them like that, just drill 3 holes in each window and you will be good in my opinion. Make sure you Loctite the mounting hardware in place inside those valve covers and use a gasket sealer on the gaskets so they don't wick oil all over the covers. Cool breathers though. Hope this helps
As far as mounting and gaskets, I think it would be important to post a picture of the reverse side of these breathers. The view of the cast in baffling will dictate mounting. I have a set on some M/T valve covers I post a picture of later.
I second bonzo's thoughts on gasket orientation. Holes are for drain back of any oil that may have been stopped by the baffling. Below are a couple pictures of some M/T breathers like yours mounted on a pair of M/T 327 valve covers.
I had that valve cover/breather combo on my ol' 55. If I remember correctly those breathers used hard-to-find 12-24 attachment screws. Regardless, like Bandit Billy said, make sure you Loctitie 'em!
The holes go the bottom(the sloped side) for oil drain back, crankcase vapors work their way from the holes then around the baffles to the top side(the straight side) and then out the vents on the sides.
Funny guy, but not true. Without documentation in hand there are actually two possibilities: 1) gasket holes flipped to top; or 2) gasket holes flipped to bottom. I appreciate everyone's sage advice, but my main hope is that someone with actual M/T documentation will chime in. Anybody? Bueller?
Uhh.............yeah it is. The picture you posted shows four mounting holes punched in the gasket, line them up with the holes in the breather and mount it with the M/T facing up.
Yeah, I know. They go on the bottom. No, it isn't. As I said in my above post......................The picture you posted shows four mounting holes punched in the gasket, line them up with the holes in the breather and mount it with the M/T facing up. There is only one way to mount the gasket and I'm pretty sure M/T would not have manufactured a part that their logo was upside down on when mounted.
