ugh....been staring for two hours. ...notice how the rear roof currently has a natural wedge going on. I dont want to loose that look and would like to carry it forward. I'm not oppossed the leaning the a pillars a little

 

These guys chop a 5W at the bottom of page 2... maybe that'll help? It may be too late since they did it a little differently though...

This thing is going to be so beautiful when its done... I love full fender 34's! Nice work so far- can't wait to see this come together now that its chopped with the fenders-

 

Still studying and mulling it over but im pretty sure I'm going to take some height out of the front roof line to continue the wedge. It's too fat...I've looked at a million chops and my eye always goes to that spot.

 

I don't have any experience with chopping tops but what you are saying makes sence to me. I like the roofline wedge in the picture.

I think what you're experiencing is why it's not an even amount removed from both ends. I haven't chopped one of these before, but no one seems to take 3" out of the rear & 3" out of the A pillar... there seems to be a staggered amount removed.

I personally like the stock length roof & raked back A pillar, but I think it's safe to say that that is more "hot rod" than "custom".

You're doing the right thing by stopping, analyzing and asking questions instead of just pushing forward!

I agree that the "wedge" looks more pleasing to the eye. To accomplish the transition to front roof portion it would suggest the front roof portion needs another height reduction, or chopped above the rain deflector detail. (which by the way transitions nicely). I wonder how that height reduction could be accomplished from side to side above the windshield, and made to look pleasing as well.

Kathy, Way to dive into it! I'm sure you'll get it figured out.

In my opinion, a 3" to 3.5" chop is perfect on a '34. It's going to be killer!

I'm watching closely, as my next build is a '34 5w also (high boy though).

Totally agree with the front shave.

 

This chop should be interesting, I was just discussing this yesterday with my friend about the upcoming chop on his '33 Tudor. He heard some recommendations about a slight wedge chop to get a better look when he was down in Louisville last week. Never heard of a "haircut" above the windshield and drip moldings on a '33-'34 until now. Always have cut these old Fords straight and felt they looked good; but always open to new ideas.

I had the same problem with my dodge, I cut just above the drip rails and throw the inside of the A piller and lowered it a half inch. Hard to explain but heres a picture with it removed.

I have not touched it. I've been working on a Panhead and looking at the 34. Hopefully I can get back on it next week.

I'm thinking I will lean the A pillars back a bit first, then address the eyebrow. It's going to take a lot more work than anticipated.

 

I say go for it and we all will be watching.....

 

Make sure you get some help if you have never done it. I could have never done it myself without help. I did it. I know. It's a lot of work on a 34 to get it right. Mine was a mere 5 1/2 chop. I think we got it right. Frame is on the rotiserre (sp) now and will get epoxy primer today. I'm working on it.
