OK so the transmission in my Dad's '41 Plymouth won't stop leaking and I'm sick of trying to figure it out. Its a turbo 250 and I got a good deal on a 700R4 out of an '88 Caprice. Now what I want to know is this a non-lockup convertor? Do I need the wiring kit to lock up the convertor? I know I need an adapter to mount the TV cable to the Holley carb. So what say you? Thanks!
I am running an old Howell vacuum lock up and an adaptor for the carb. Just a tip though pre-89 trams had more issues than later ones
I am running a 700r4. It does not have a lockup converter and no wiring to the 4 prong connector. You are right that you need the geometry corrector where the cable connects to your carb.
I have a 700R4 in my model A. I never hooked up the lockup for the torque converter. It runs just like any other transmission that doesn't have a lockup converter. It may cost a little in gas mileage but I don't run a lot of highway miles. The proper geometry for the TV cable is critical so buy the right pieces for the carburetor. I think the lockup will help the trans to run a little cooler when engaged, but that doesn't seem to be a problem.
Scroll down to part number # 12 here, works real nice: http://www.transmissioncenter.net/highperf700r4.htm
Hook up the lockup. The gas savings will pay for one of the kits, in short order. Also, as has been mentioned, it will run cooler. Heat is the enemy of automatic transmissions.
I run lockup in my 35 wired in via the brake switch to unlock the convertor. Been working for over 10yrs without issue. As stated adjusting the TV cable is critical to transmission survival.
Some of the best info I found when converting my 64 Malibu were at " http://purplesagetradingpost.com/sumner/techinfo/700R4p1.html ", Sumner put together some great info that even I understood. Canuck
Sure, but why? The feature is there for a reason. Why buy a kit to eliminate it, when you can keep it, an even have a manual override?
How do I know if it has a lockup convertor? When I got the transmission it came with the stock convertor.
