My 56 Oldsmobile fuel gauge comes up with eratic readings. Fuel fuel tank, it shows full for a very little while to then drop down to half full or even quarter full.
I took it out of the car, put 12 volts on the left contact when you look down on it from the front side.
The right contact should give a full reading, when grounded, but the hand just moves a tiny little bid.
I get around 90 ohm when measuring the resistance.
Any idea what I can do?
Is it dead, do I need a replacement?
Thanks from Germany for your help.

Make sure your sending unit reads a smooth 90 ohms down to 0 with an ohmmeter. If so, then the gauge is probably the culprit.

    Wouldn't 56 be 0-30 ohms?

Would be nice, if someone could sell me a functioning (!!!) 56 Oldsmobile fuel gauge!
I guess that is the best way to get the problem solved...

I'll look in the shop, but yes, it should be a 30 ohm sender. They didn't go to 90 ohms until later, approximately 1964. Also, did you ground the gauge mount plate while performing your bench test?

Whow, I thought that I got a 56 gauge and I read 90 ohms, I already spoke to usapartssupply, the do not have it.
The offered me to rebuild it, but it is too expensive to send the core to them from Germany...

So your sending unit reads 90 ohms?
