Nope I got the story when in a guys try 5 stash and I made the comment when I seen the front fenders that had powered by Ford painted on them that no matter how many times you painted the fenders that powered by Ford would always bleed back through.

First, from the George Klass collection:

    4483980.jpg
'35 fuel coupe, not sure where. The coupe was owned and built by Archie Ary, from Colton, and one of the co-founders of the Colton Drag Strip. Archie would go on to run a radically chopped Crosley sedan with a fuel Chrysler and then a string of fuel dragsters.

Gene Conway's Navy Destroyer, one of several Jeep funny cars in the early days. Gene Conway was once Gene Ciambella (sp??) but changed his name to Gene Conway, apparently "Conway" was one of the characters in "McHale's Navy"? I didn't ever watch that stuff, so not sure.

Garlits against ? Can't quite see who the other car is

    Cover of Life, '57.

    bay-area-bantam-against-t-of-dennison.jpg
Dennison, Arlansky, & Knox, maybe Ron O'Donnell driving, from Illinois, racing Quality Auto Parts from Cerritos, CA, this might be '64? Don't know who won, but it's a classic fuel altered match.

    blue_angels_012.jpg
Blue Angels, think they were from Massilion,OH...not sure where the track is.

    FREMONT_RAILS.jpg
Jim Herbert in the "Lizard," looks like they won top fuel over Gotelli, Jim Davis, and John Batto....looks like Batto in the other lane, '65 or '66?

    pink%20GMC2.jpg
Here's a really old one, Ed Pink's GMC in a '36 fuel coupe.

    pink%20GMC3.jpg
Here's the engine, Hilborn with what looks like a Wayne 12-port head...these 6's could be really competitive with the right equipment. Ed Pink would go on to fuel dragsters, running the Ansen & Pink T/F car (once the Fuller, Zeuschel and Prudhomme Bakersfield winner), and then the Don Long-built Old Master, which has been either recreated or restored (Roo would know)....(correction, thanks to observations below: those are Riley carbs, ...and thanks to Roo for clarification on the restoration of Pink's "Old Master." and to others for identifying the carbs.)

No ID on this fueler, looks like pre-'65.

Gabe, as I look at it again, I'm wondering if those are one-barrel side draft carburetors, instead of Hilborns? They seem to have floats, maybe motorcycle carbs? Anyone else know? No, I don't think your eyes are failing you, good call.

After its career as the Old Master the car became the Wheeler Dealer and I first saw it in that form at Mike Guffey's shop in Indiana. Pete did an amazing job on the restoration which included bringing the wheelbase back to the original shorter version. He also saved the original cowl (with its "toe" bumps) despite the fact that it has suffered somewhat over the later years.

Having had a Horning-Fisher head with Hilborn injection, I am here to say thet is not Hilborn. It looks more like Amel carburetors to me.

  26. I don't think they are Amals Rich, but they for sure are carbs.

No ID on either of these modified roadsters (another class long extinct)...ID from Chase Knight: Steve Melise from NY on the near side. Dodge wedge engine, later had one of the first 8.71 blowers. The AA/C in the far lane is Riccio-Simone running BBC W motor. (thanks to SixtiesStyle for the ID)

Chris Karamesines, before the blower, maybe Union Grove?

    Don't remember this one...

But do remember this one...kicked my butt at San Gabriel...Hugh Tucker, here with a blown Olds, later went to a blown Chrysler....(ok, I was driving a dragster, and my plug wires blew off as we got close to the finish line, but the spectators didn't know that, they were cheering for the street roadster, and they got their wish!)

Flagman...don't know who is driving the Dragmaster car

    Forstka vs twin engsm.jpg
John Forstka's Fiat fuel altered, versus an unknown twin (maybe Blue Angels?). Forstka, from the Midwest (Wisconsin??) once held the Drag News 1320 fuel altered record.

Not sure where, who, or when...anyone?
