Not much planned besides LARS in a few weeks. I quit planning on local stuff when I didn't have a car to drive anymore. Tons of local stuff here, I make it to see friends. http://desertcruzin.com

I'd be at Bo Huff's in Dragerton today except we have a wedding going today.

Let me know if you're going to anything, I'll make it and say hi.

Don't know Eric. An 80 over flathead with a Max 1 Isky cam and two 94's. Don't think it will get me in the two club, LOL. But it would be fun to try as long as it didn't oil down the salt.

I'm not going to make the two club, but if I make the USFRA 130 club without oiling the salt that will be cool.

That's about where I'll be too. Pull the headlights and windshield off and put the hammer down until she stops...

No pics today, sorry. I took my youngest son Corbin up to Bob's today while the wife had a baby shower for our oldest daughter. Good time to escape too, as 40 estrogen filled women stampeded my house!

Corbin, Bob and I worked on a simple project, putting the 9" back together. What a shitty afternoon! Once I got the third member in for the third or fourth time we put the axles in. Worked on one side, then the other, for a while. We checked, double checked and triple checked the numbers on the bearings but they just fit too tight... but OH so close!

We took Emory cloth to the housing and worked the passenger side into a usable size. The driver's side took a little more work. Five hours later we had the axles fit and Bob said "Hey, where are the seals?"

    Yes, really.

I may have mentioned I haven't done a rear axle before. This added significantly to my learning process and vocabulary.

As punishment I sanded another wheel.

  18. I had a whole apprenticeship to learn my automotive (blue) vocabulary. JW:eek::D

Most of us learned at the side of true masters of the art. A tradition passed down through the ages. :)

  20. This reminds me of the young fella that started his apprenticeship approximately 2 years behind me in Panelbeating. He ws a clean cut boy straight from school but from out in the district. He came from a large family who were ever Mormons or Jehovah Witnesses, can't remember which, but he was so polite, never ever sworn, had the ability to do the messes jobs yet remain as if he had come straight from church. Well one day he shocked all of us in the workshop, he was sitting through the rear window (removed of course ) of a car drilling the spot welds so to remove the damaged roof panel when the drill bit walked across to the edge of the lip and due to the weight he had on the drill, it went straight down into his thigh right up to the chuck. Now we used to have the radio on at a reasonable volume and with 4 otther guys working on other cars, but we all heard Asprin yell out the F__K word. Heck we all got such a fright to hear him swear that we all raced to see what had happened. Just as well to as he had past out and was sliding head first down the trunk lid with the drill still rotating in his thigh. The boss slowly hand rotated the drill in reverse to remove and got him of to hospital for repair. It was the first and only time we heard Asprin swear in all the time I worked with him. Oh and his real name is Michael but he earnt the nick name Asprin early on as he was a bit of a " Slow working Dope " but a realy nice chap at the end of the day. Hope I don't offend anybody here if they are either Mormon or Jehovah Witnesses.

I am Mormon and this doesn't offend me in the least. Wish people around me could say they had never heard me swear! Great story!

We all learned a lot of "bad" language.
Over here there is a song, in danish, the village-mechanics apprentice is working on an tractor. This is back when the village mechanics had to do cars, tractors, lorrys and construction. A little of everything.

The kid, most likely a lad of 16, doing the same as the skilled worked.

    First vers goes something like:

I stood outside the workshop changed tires on a Fordson Major
Struck me own hand and yelled ' the appalling words
The foreman came out, he ha'd ' I heard me yell.
What do you yell for Lad ? What's wrong ?
He looked at my finger. Is that all?
And then he told about when he was in apprentice :
When he was apprentice as yell ft smallish stuff
If he hit his finger and and the blood gushed out !
He just wiped the blood with a cloth
    He never spoke a word
And he had done so would his master get out
and talk about when he was the apprentice :
For when he was apprenticed they teached them with a good beating
Until there backs looked like side of pork (think a barbecue or a sailors back after getting wiped)
    But they soaked it up
    And never made a complaint
And had they done, so would their master come to present
and talk about when he was in learning.

It goes on till the get a arm ripped off and then killed afterwards.
The whole song is in a cheerful tone, and it clearly they play on the old tune off: The older I get the better I was!

I just came to think about it, because it it's how it was when I was a lad. And I learned a lot, from the grey beards! And I still do!

    Sorry for the thread jacking

Love the build and I've been subscribed and lurking for a long time.
But I like the work and the color!

We all learned a lot from the "grey beards" and now we are them. Time to live the long tradition and pass down the history (and a few choice words while we're at it).

I look like a older guy, I know stuff older people know, at least around here.
But I'm not a graybeard, yet but I plan to become one.

    If I'm good enough.

And we all end up saying the same stuff we hated when growing up, like:

You can do what? Undo a nut ?? I can piss on it so hard it falls of on its own, so put your back in to it lad.

    Or;

    Get to it, lad.

    Or;
If you do your best from now on, and till eternity, you might have a shot at my job. But that a major might.

It could go on and on.

Ha, that's awesome! Thanks for chiming in.
I'm getting there quick. Grey has begun to take over the sides of my head. Unfortunately the wisdom isn't coming as quickly.
Watch out brother, the grey comes up quick!

Do you watch Roadkill on YouTube? David Freiburger, who's been doing this a long time, installed a bearing without the retainer plate and was big enough to not edit out his mistake.

  30. Seen that a couple of times.......managed to dodge it myself:cool::D JW
