Overhauling the brakes, steering and suspension these days. Trying to get it safe for the road.

its been a while.
I have been busy working on mechanical stuff. Nothing exciting.
The kind of things i do for a living. Boring for me. But the things im really good at.
Brakes front end and drivability.
Got alot done . Dont want to post a king pin job or a brake job its boring for every one . But its some of the most important systems on a safe car,no skimping here. yet bone stock.
I want to drive the wheels off this thing over the summer. Gave up on the pretty details, for now.

But now its gotta be perfect
And reliable.

I had some frustration getting the engine running right.
It was always fine starting and lot driving in and out of the garage .
Got new exhaust,fresh tune new stat, carb rebuild valve adjust and more. Seemed like the more i ran it the worse it got.
Tweeking everything nothing gets better. Grumble.
One carb bank wont lean drop the other is right at 1/2to 3/4
So i break out the comp test
125 on all but 8 gets 120
Spec for 8 to 1 compression.
Then on to the leak down test 20% on all. but on 1 and 8. Show 50%.blasting air back to the intake. Grumble
Off comes the head.
Out comes the valves..
Yep, intakes ,they are pitted it ran good for years
Until i blew out the carbon.

 

Guess you know where this is going.

OH NOOO,now you really scares me.... I have same not good running problems sometimes & i'm telling myself it is badquality petrolium! The BIG problem now seems to be that i have not a checkbook....... But i do have a wife! Soooooo maybe.....

Its not that bad, just needs a valve job. Has good pressure and compression.
Gonna have jimmy atlantic grind the seats. Then slap new valves in it. No worries

I pulled it to clean and seal
It.ill mic it and platsiguage it too. replace the pilot bearing ,mounts, lines, etc
Also wanted to paint all those things in the bay.

The point of my rant was to share the the usefullness of a compression check and more importantly a LEAKDOWN TEST to locate a problem. Not many folks do leakdowns . I cant talk about laptops and pressure transducers here. But there is a more modern way.

If i ever get a nailhead ill send it to Cadillac. He did a bang up job on my 394 olds.
Im not going all out here.
This 263 isnt worthy of ronnie.

As for gloves i use them at my spinawrench jobby job.
But in the shed ... wouldnt be traditional. Haha

parts, seems like a lot out there. Im using nors American stuff.

Keeping mine bone stock for reliability.
Except for a 41 dual manifold. And a polished head.
Just a quickie refresh.

Learned my lessions building a million (OT) air cooled vw's back in the day. Mild to wild.
I'm still open to advice and pointers.

 

I ordered from EGGE and CARS inc. I'm just doing rings, timing chain and gears, and all bearings. had cylinders honed, they were in good shape. I had bad bearings and broken rings. still ran like a champ though.

 

I've known of EGGE for a long time.
As for cars inc, thanks for the tip.I forgot about them. Awsome buick supplier. A lot like what Fusick was for my Oldsmobile.

 

Took a little more than a month but finaly got the engine rebuilt.
Lucked out on the bottom end. Last builder put everything i would in it.
Cam pistons tchain rods mains etc

Kind of a waste of time.
But now i know what is there.
Really just needed a valve job. But i went through it all any way. It will be nice not to have any leaks.
Spent a lot of time stripping and painting parts.
Went through the tranny while it was out too

Never ran better. Idles at 450. And pulls nice and smooth up to 4k

Almost put the dual exhaust and intake in but decided to wait. Left it stock and simple. Except for a shim head gasket and a little port polish.Some day ill hop it up.
But for now im gonna enjoy it for what it is. With some respect for the guys that designed it.

Lame update.

Been cleaning and buffing out a horror show of overspray. From painting the engine, and chassis got carried away. Grumble

Got some trick wipers and arms from Newport Engineering,pricey but worth it.
8 inch blades and direct fit adjustable arms.
running on the oe vacuum motor.

 

Looking great Shane. Can't wait to see you terrorizing the streets in this car.

 

Sometimes its the little things that keep me motivated.
I had these caps for a while. I got them from a lost friend that was gonna use them on a 36 ford...never happened. They mean a lot to me. Those that know will understand...
