Looks like he should have bought the Barracuda rather than the valiant convert.

I believe this is a Packard Panther. As a kid I hung around Speed Garage in Elmhurst Queens in the early 60's, it was the shop for Elm Motors on Queens Blvd. they sold high performance cars. One of the cars they took in was this Packard they said was a "Packard Panther" never seen one before or after. A pretty rare car, it also was black and looked just like the one pictured.

Opening of the new steel bridge between Yamhill and Marion counties, December 12, 1916, just south of Newberg. The bridge carried only a water line for the past 50 years or so, having been condemned for vehicular traffic.

This black car is not the '52 McCauley one-off. For one thing, it has a '54 front end. Given the O/P's story about seeing these is a showroom in black color, I have a feeling there is more to the story. Perhaps someone was turning out "Panthers" based upon the McCauley design? We know that the '54 Packard Panther concept was a totally different design.

Thank you Mac, the car I saw looked just like the one pictured, it had a very long trunk and an
El Camino type passenger compartment I was told it was a "Panther" but when I looked up a Panther about a year ago it looked a little different than what I remember.

WOW! I just got to Mac's post when I replied and then scrolled down and seen yours. I did see, touch and ride in a Packard that was black like the one pictured. Elm motors was a "used car lot" and dealt in many hi-po cars and odd cars. Thats all I know of the Packard I don't know the year of the car only that I saw it around 1964 and it was beautiful.

  25. The McCauley Packard used parts from a few different years, including '53- here is a quote from conceptcarz:

"It used parts destined for the 1953 model line, including the hood and wheel wells of the 1953 Caribbean. It has a 1952 hood crest with 1951 lettering placed on a 1952 grill. It has many unique features such as extensive use of chrome on the side of the car, dual exhausts, a rear wiper, and two seater configuration. Mr. Macauley had several one-off created for him over the years, all were built in-house, all were experimental, and all featured two seater roadster bodies."

  28. I wonder where the shot with the Mk1 Consul and caravan was taken. From the style of the tent, the weatherboard house and the power outlet box it could almost be new Zealand.
