    STOP making me drool!!!

I am a 40's guy and lust over evey one I see. All I have been able to afford is a beatup 40 pickup and a 59 Panel I pulled out of the junk yard for $300.00.
Next to 32 ford Panels' and even Deliveries the 40 41 panel, once you remove the spare tire holder are the best!!!!

Who doesn't love a purpose built vehicle?Personally,I've been after a friend of mine for 15 years to try and get him to sell me his '54 delivery or his '56 ambulance. But the butthead just won't let go of one ;)

  4. Well, I'll be dipped! I did not know this, thank you for the history lesson. Does this hold true with all makes and models?

Way too many years ago, driving through Shreveport LA, I came across the only service vehicle cooler than a 40/41 Panel/Delivery (thanks for explaining the difference). It was a 40/41 Ford hearse/ambulance with the long side (loader) doors. The PERFECT tow vehicle. Shoulda, woulda but couldnea (to my lasting regret).

I just built this 1941 panel at my shop. Drove from Ohio to Texas for Lonestar Roundup. Just sold it yesterday. Also have a 1932 Panel in the works. They are cool.

Nice panel. Is that a lightning strike to the left in the stormy pic, or a reflection from inside the cameraman's car??

I sure love the Ford Sedan Deliveries and the Panel Trucks of 1940.

The early GM and Mopar's did the same thing.
My 37 Chevy Panel was on a truck platform and had 2 rear doors.
My 37 Chevy Sedan Delivery was on a car platform and had a single rear door. The Chevy Sedan Delivery was actually a coach kit that used the front part of a 4dr car so the doors are 10" smaller than the longer 2dr doors. The 37 Chevy was the first year GM cars used all steel and had no wood in the doors. The back section of the Sedan Delivery still used the wood which I ended up replacing with steel..

Sedan delivery is based on a two-door wagon. If you like the Ford shape, International made a K panel truck too, similar shape from 1940-1949, might be cheaper to buy than the Ford.

I like both but prefer the sedan delivery. I have owned 10 of them over the years and currently drive this one.

My photographer friend Max owns a panel and hauls all of his equipment to the job site.

The rear cargo space provides versatility when on your trip — Sleeping quarters with air mattress, parts storage until your money runs out or just a cool place to hang out and listen to some sounds and have a cold one.

CW took a great photo of the back door delivery.

Plenty of room to add almost any engine from a SBC to a Hemi. Mine has an Edelbrock Signature Series #40 — 460HP/460 Torque with Inglese injection.

Where did you hear that (about the doors?) Panels have always been truck based and Deliveries (also known as "sedan deliveries") have always been car based. Regardless of the number of doors.

Yes, and Panel Trucks have two door
And Sedan Deleivers have one door
Coach Deliveries - Ambulances and Hearsts were usually car based and one door, except for Civl and Govt Ambulances that 'could' be truck based and have yet have one door.

You are correct typo41. I should have typed a better response being that all Sedan Deliveries are car based and have one door while Panels are truck based and have 2 doors. I hope this clears things up. Peace

Hey Typo, you have a typo.

The word is hearse. There is no T in it.

Tom Beatty's delivery was always a favorite of mine, probably because of the blower motor he had in it!

I used to own the Tom Beatty delivery back in the 80's. I will hunt up a photo. It had a SBC in it when I purchased it, but you could see where the chassis and floor were cut for the Olds and transmission. It is now blue and still in the LA area.

This is how I purchased the car from Jack in Michigan.

Roger Hart (Fresno Hart's Street Rods) had a '40 Mortuary Coach in his shop, single rear door and LONG side door, passenger side...waiting its turn for the "Mustang II Table"...(shudder!)
    Roger hated Ford axles.
The car was dove gray, a real cherry...he said it had done 'Mortuary Service' since it was purchased new from the Fresno Ford dealer!
Car looked like a museum piece...so rare...

i do have to say i miss my 47 ford delivery, it was the best driving, most comfortable hot rod i have had.

  28. P1010687.JPG Agree with the Utility angle, love my 49 Ford panel for work and play.
Its on a 88 Suburban frame with a 350 TBI 400R4 and tall rear gears that get great hiway mileage
Use it all the time and travel all over BC and the Pacific NW with no problems.
