Looking for any and all info on how to remove the torque tube from a 28 31Ford Bango rear. My buddy is looking to convert it to open drive shaft. Any diagrams would be helpful. thanks Dan
To do an open drive on a model A banjo will require some work. The drive shaft is a tapered and keyed fit into the pinion, you would need to take off the driver side axle tube to access the castle nut and cotter pin. Once the drive shaft is out, it would need to be cut and have splines machined, your choice to match the yoke you plan to use. Then you would need to make a custom cap to keep oil in the rear, it will also need to have another bearing as the A banjo only has one.
Speedway has an open drive conversion for a Model A for $300, the rear end in the picture isn't a Model A rear end. Once you have converted it to open drive you will need to do something with the wishbone
I made one once, it was pretty easy if you have a lathe. I don't think I'd do it again because of the unsupported pinion, I think they need the torque tube to help support them.
Think Check out the following thread over at the Ford Barn, this should get you in the right direction http://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=22691
Sorry but why would you do it. If you plan to go open drive , means you will probably have more HP than stock, so why not go the A v8 diff route and ft a HRW conversion to a V8 diff. More ratio choices and stronger.
