I picked up a 1940 Chevrolet pickup 3/4 ton, it has been disassembled down to the rolling frame and cab and fenders, etc. most of the parts have been sanded and primed, frame has only one small rust hole. In taking it apart all tags and stuff were removed, we guess. My question is where on a 1940 Chevy truck is the veh. ID number? We have researched several site and have found different answers. It is not on the cowl under the pass. side of the cab, can not seem to find it on the frame? any suggestions? In Wisconsin need to have it titled right, they are kinda picky, it does have a title now. Just looking for a number on the vehicle.. any help would be appreciated.
On the motor, they didn't have a "vin" number and most of them were registered by the number on the engine which should be on a pad near the distributer.
Well its going to have one isn't it? There should be some numbers on the frame probably over the rear axle or under the cab that you can use.
Look on the cowl, passenger side, for the two holes for the screws that used to hold it on. Or was it on the floor, near the passenger side seat? 39 was on the cowl, 41 was on the floor, I don't know where 40 was. Anyways, the tag was held on with two screws, and it might be lost. Some states used the engine number for title/registration, others used the vehicle serial number (VIN).
1940 engine numbers run 2697268 through 3665902 the numbers are located on the pad at the rear of the distributor. NOTE: All truck engines have a "K" prefix. Example: K*2759129 Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN) The body plate is located on the firewall under the passenger side of the hood. The number on the plate is the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) of the truck.
