Projects The Weeks & Fredette '34 Ford TROG Build

With less than 6 months til The Race of Gentlemen, it is time to start building this years race car. Last year Nils and I built our TROG Model T roadster in just 2 short months out of parts we had kicking around and parts we bartered for.

This year we have decided to build a '34 5w coupe. Nils had a ton of body parts stashed away for a future project and I had some suspension/chassis parts to use. There will be some assembly required!


So we packed them all in my truck and I brought them up to my shop


We have most of the panels to build the car but we were missing one big part, a driver side quarter panel. Luckily our friend/club member Steve Shepard is a sick metal man so I headed down to his shop to build a complete new panel! We took a template off the passenger side quarter and mirror imaged it. Steve is super talented and within a day we had a new quarter roughed out.






Steve later worked on flanging the edges and building a quarter window.

 

Off to a good start. If my 32 5W gets accepted this year, let's pair up and race. I don't think we ever raced our roadsters against each other last year.

 

Nils and I bought a core 8BA motor from RI and tore it down for rebuild. We plan on building a nicely built flathead punched out .125 with a 4" crank. Nils picked up some Isky adjustable lifter, valves, springs, guides, keepers and piston.




Nils had this 3/4 cam in stock that will go in the motor


Nils then spent many hours porting and polishing the 8BA block. Its now ready for the machine work




We also have a little trick up our sleeve...a nice little McCulloch supercharger!

 

Looks like you guys are off to a great start. I'll be tuned into this one.

 

Yeah, I don't think we ever matched up last year. We'll be sure to make it happen this year!

We have one thread asking for 1.8 million for 34 body's and then this guy just whips out a sweet ass quarter panel. I wonder how many body panels you could whip up for 1.8 million? Some of you guys and your metal skills make me want to just throw my body hammers in the trash! Nice work!

Nils came up to the shop last night for a couple hours and we got started on the frame. We got the frame squared and tacked to the fab table. The frame is in decent shape and is nice and straight. A couple pits here and there we will fix along the way.


Nils had a cool old flattened crossmember that was built back in the day so we knocked out the stock crossmember and with a little trimming installed the flattened one


I'll make some filler pieces and finish welding up the crossmember tonight

I've been getting some parts ready for the front end. I cleaned up and sandblasted these '39 front backing plates.


We all know how much of a pain it is to lay out and drill backing plates. I came up with an idea to cut a template on my CNC plasma and lay it over the backing plate and drill through it. (I know its not "traditional" but I am using all my tools to make my life easier). I drew it up in CAD, just need to get some material to cut it out. I'll let you know how it works out.


I picked up this 33/34 front end up a couple years ago. Someone made a home made trailer out of it years ago. Luckily they didn't hack it up too much. Check out the extra leafs added, they must have been doing some heavy hauling!




Of course the perch pins were rusted right in there. After a couple hours of fighting with it, I got it all apart!


The bones cleaned up pretty well after sandblasting and cleaning. These will be getting drilled and slugged


Early tie rod ends will be used on the split bone ends. I will machine an adapter in the lathe to accept these early ends.


Torrnados club member, Nick, donated this wheel for us to use in the car. Should look good in there!

 

I had a little spare time after work last night so I machined up some adapters to run the early tie rod ends on the split bones.

Thanks guys. Nils came up last night and we stripped down the rear end. Sorry, I forgot to take pics. I have a 46 rear end we will be using for the juice brakes, drums, and 46 rear bones for a little extra strength.
