More from the Norm Grudem collection, mostly Pomona, early-mid '50s:

    323windowstreetrod.jpg
Probably taken in the parking lot

    34coupeontrailer.jpg
Not a lot of guys ran whitewalls back then...pretty nice body work on this '34, looks like a grafted '40 Ford nose

    324doorsedan.jpg
    No ID

    900.jpg
No ID, looks like a carbureted Olds...note the tow bar, cars like this were usually flat-towed to the track.

    7418681.jpg
Probably owned or at least sponsored by Nellie Taylor in Whittier, CA

    A-Modifiedroadsterinpits.jpg
No ID, not much of a roll bar, rules were more lax then

    A-MRroadster.jpg
Pape Brothers well built flathead powered MR...has been perfectly restored

    COMP%20COUPE%20BELMONT%20SANCHEZ.jpg
Belmont Sanchez, body work by Chuck Porter, painted purple and yellow...Chrysler powered, ran in the 130 range. Sanchez is better known for his Bonneville Studebaker which set a ton of record with both Ardun and Chrysler power plants. Looks like the Pomona officials changed Belmont's original choice of a number

    4277692.jpg
    Sandoval Brothers, 296" flathead

    4567423.jpg
Waterworth and Morris 296" flathead gasser. These guys would later put this engine in a Bantam competition coupe.

  4. That is one good-looking hot rod that, apparently, ran good, too.

Up through the mid-50s' fuel burning bikes were a threat to win top eliminator

    upload_2015-3-21_21-1-24.png
Reminder that we had rear-engined dragsters from the early days onward

a few more from the Norm Grudem collection, posted on George Klass:

    317786.jpg
Jazzy Nelson, seen earlier racing a bike...'34 Ford frame, fuel flathead

    994779.jpg
    In the pits, Pomona

    1376522.jpg
Clark Cagle. This car ran a swing rear axle and a fuel Ardun

    4962639.jpg
Harold Nicholson, brother of "Dyno Don." If anyone can find an earlier use of a Bantam roadster body, speak up, because I think this is the first. Car ran a blown GMC, but was so evil-handling that Pomona banned it until Harold got it to go straight. Don Montgomery once described Harold as the smartest guy he had known when it came to drag racing. Sadly Harold died at San Fernando in '59 driving a blown flathead dragster owned by Ray Hawkins and Pat Akins...apparently front spindle broke.

and some shots from other sources, posted on George Klass

    1282088.jpg
Forgot who this roadster belonged to...seen at Lions
    '
    3582509.jpg
Thurmond Brothers, San Pedro, CA. Long after most other altered had gone to tube frames and fiberglass bodies, these guys still ran this steel deuce with blown Chrysler power. They didn't win much but they sure put on a show!

    2428803.jpg Later Pomona, no ID

One of the great racers of all time, Gary Cagle

Midnight Oil first ran with my Cook in it, followed by Vic's single-stick Sparks with a GMC blower on the front. A Pontiac Tempest, a 2-port Riley, a Rutherford and now has a 4-port Riley in it. All were Model B lower-ends except the Pontiac. Sadly, Vic passed away a few months ago. Not sure yet what will happen to Oil?

Does that say "Panella Trucking" I don't claim to have seen every Willys from the day but this one I've never seen and I like it.

Thanks, jadegrenade never knew he had that collection it's awesome. I recall the pick up truck, anglia, Opel and the later P/S truck. Panella always had beautiful cars.

Midnite Oil's the longest standing passion I've ever had for a car, and the layout concept for the Flyin' Brick II, the car I have today. Just needed to say that.

  16. In the early 1990's My sons and I visited Bob Panella and his friend Art Gufstafson. we brought a 1933 Willys front bumper assembly out on the plane { try doing that now } we got an Australian 1933 Willys cowl and drivers door from Bob, as well as a tour of his collection, plus some souvenirs that we still treasure. Bob and Art are good people. We enjoyed our time with them at Bob's as well as at Sacramento Raceway the next day. nick.
