Projects Its alive! AV8 Roadster engine start up

  1. Thanks I'm trying to figure out my plan, I'm going to use a 59ab, 39 toploader and 37 rear on my A frame. From your thread, it appears I need to lengthen my frame about 7 3/8 inches as a start. Seems you dropped the rear the width of the frame as well, what rear spring did you use? Love your build :)

I tried to get the right stance and still have a good ride and I couldn't acheive that with either A or T spring so I talked to my local spring guy and told him what I estimated the sprung and unsprung weight would be as well as all the other deminsions. He used my original A spring and built me an all new spring set up that perfectly matched my original spring. Itappears it is going to set right as well as ride good.

Well I have been working on the roadster but nothing very glamorous. Built a fixture under the dashboard to provide a place to mount the tachometer brain, voltage regulator, fuse box, and relays. Then it was time to sand, stain, and varnish all the wood. I hope to spend some time installing it over Christmas.

Not much progress the last few weeks. It has been cold in the shop and I am getting old and lazy. I did get a panel built to warehouse the switches and choke under the left side of the dash. I also built a trap door to gain access to the master cylinder reservoir. Still waiting on some Plateing to come back and the rest of my gauges to ship. Starting my list for the swap meet in a couple weeks. Mostly small stuff but I really need to find a fuel tank. Two years ago i had a really nice round tank in my hands and someone gave the guy full price out from under me. Reality bad deal.

Not much has happened the last week. Changed out a few screws for period correct screws and spent a little clean up all around. I also got my list done for the swap meet. I am at a stand still until I get my guages and plateing back. My old buddies will be her on Thursday for a little bench raceing and some time in the shop as well as the swap meet.

Great weekend. Swap meet was good! I picked up some of the new parts I needed from the venders but had no luck with the other parts I needed. Two old fuel tanks but neither was the correct deminsions. Several of my old group of car guys from out of state showed up so a nice garage party happened. My guages came in the mail so now it is time to make a little progress. Pictures to fallow!

Few pictures of the last few days. Installed the gauges, trimmed the doors to be ready to hang, and installed the cowl lacing and patent tag

After taking a few weeks of and doing absolutely nothing (life and work) I received a few pieces back from the chrome shop today. Went to the shop and decided to install the fresh door strikers and realized the I had to take the side wood back out to put the threaded plate in. What a pain a 10 minute job took 2 hours. I am going to do a trial run on the hood fit next and if it fits as good as it did in mock up I will get brave and install the doors. Pictures to fallow.

HotRodMickey the gauges came from a small shop that built wooden boats. The panel and small gauges are new old stock A/C and the speedometer is Stewart Warner. I sent them to Williamsons to rebuild the speedo and shorten the temp gauge stinger.

Really love whats going on here! Looks like you stained your wood the same color that I did too, something I mulled over for was too long. My issue was that I bought the wood and let it sit in the box for too long and by the time that I finally pulled it out I was missing pieces and some were COMPLETELY wrong. Too late to complain and send it back now. Lesson learned. Build looks amazing!

I spent a lot of time fine tuning the wood. Nothing really bad but just the little things.

Here is an interesting bit of history of the roadster when it was actually in use in 1947. The video shows this car when it was being driven on the farm in 1947. It was put in the barn about 1954 and this is a picture of when we pulled it out for this project in 2011. Kind of back tracking a little but I thought someone may find it interesting.

Spring hit so I have been doing yard work, planting a few flowers, and the most fun is cleaning the Koi pond. Basically life got in the way. I am going to the shop tonight and start fitting the hood and doors. I will get some updates for you. I guess that I am to ANAL because sometimes it takes days to find the correct bolt or screw so things move kind of slow.
Thanks for the interest my project.
