66 Dodge Coronet torsion bar question .. ?? wanting to lower it ..

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 62cadd, Apr 24, 2011.

  1. It's not the length of the torsion bar that determines the spring rate, it is the diameter of the torsion rod. For a B-body, you can get several diameters from what a 225/6 car, or a drag car has (.81") to autocross aftermarket stiffness (1.32"), last I saw.

Yeah, I'm assuming the car is level now.
If it isn't then your absolutely right on the bolt lengths not being a concern.
Still, I like to have a base line to work from so a level floor and a measuring tape will be a given for me when I set mine up regardless!

BTW...do you mean 3/4 turn on the bolt or 3/4" more from the floor?
3/4" more from the floor would seem excessive but I'm not really sure how soft those bars are!

Actually the length IS just as important to spring rate as the diameter.
However, I believe B bodys only have one available length anyway so its a moot point.

BOLD so that someone won't come back with..."C Bodys are longer and A bodys are shorter." hahaha :p

Well finished the drop today, had to get some different U bolts and it was a a back breaker but got it done, the front was easy the back was a different story.. 4" blocks in the back and torsion bars turned down about 5 times, didnt think it was gonna look tough but I think it looks tough..anyways here it is...

  6. my first car was a 70 charger, used to raise that critter up, had l-60-15's on the rear and 70's on the front, cragars all the way around and the up level stance made the car look mean.

  7. I used 2 inch blocks in the rear, cranked down the bars in the front till it was level. Installed gas shocks, radial tires, rode excellent!-MIKE:cool:
