No....and yes....sprayed conventional candies....this is my first foray into water based paint systems.

Sorry, I got a bit busy and went back to work after a month and a half off for the holidays...I was hoping to get everything done prior to going back but alas that did not happen....I'll get ya'll up to speed...

    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1422431705.317912.jpg

    White base goes on....

    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1422431737.013538.jpg

    Silver intermediate base goes on...

    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1422431769.125210.jpg

    Now color!

    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1422431839.969816.jpg

I just pulled the paper and plastic off the roof and re-papered and plastic-ed the tequila yellow in prep for the candy orange tomorrow....

And yes I ran out of masking/butcher paper....I found that Christmas tree wrapping/butcher paper works fabulously!

I'll get the candy orange on tomorrow, pull the paper/plastic and let it dry while I work for a week or so and have the striper stop by to divide the two colors....then it's time for clear.

Thanks Chaz....however....yesterday I suffered a small setback...the candy orange, which I have been fighting to get right turned on me...

Candy anything is hard to spread....I can't seem to get this right....I spent days shooting test panels to make sure I wouldn't have surprises...in the beginning it shot as a safety cone orange...I tweaked some things at the tech rep's suggestion (yes I called) and the color changed back to the candy orange I originally picked off the chip....

I replicated those tweaks on the truck....and it came out safety cone orange....making my truck look like a blasted candy corn...

I was pissed....I walked away and called the tech rep again...we talked...we found no apparent solutions....I'm scrapping the color...a correct test panel does no good for the truck...

So I went with a pearl metallic white for the roof...I had to order more supplies so I am down till I get color...(the good news is....if I wanted safety cone orange this is spot on and spread/laid down great!)

The biggest good news is this product spreads so thin that I just have to reseal the bastard orange color and start fresh...so no sanding as long as I use Auto Air Colors....still it sucks...I was hoping to have the truck in clear the next few days off I have and that prolly won't happen now....but it's taken this long, what's another few days right?

    Blah....just blah

    The carnage

    Throwing sealer back on...

  6. Well that sucks. Did it just not stay translucent?

  7. Either way- you've had pitfalls along the way,and made things cherry! Good for you! Another step closer.....Looks great from here. You'll be driving sooner than you think! Probably not at the anticipated deadline, but your kicking some ass all around- YOU ARE making it happen!

K13, that's the only thing I can figure....Tech Rep ran through everything, equipment, tip size, air pressure, mix ratio etc....

The test panels come out fabulous...the truck not so much....it's unexplainable....

I got some boxes today...unfortunately in the midst of a sleep deprivation tour at work (two 20 hr days back to back) so haven't hadda chance to see if I am back in business....

Thanks for the update. I quite like the base white. From where I'm sitting, the orange looks great!

Wow. Cory, your a braver man then me, if I had that many hours in bodywork and prep I don't think I'd be trying a "new" type of paint. I've heard too many problems with water base but then it's old guys like me that are to stuck in their ways to really learn a new process!
I will give you credit for sticking with it so long, a lot of guys would of gave up long time ago. Glad to see it happening!

Other than that one hiccup....it's gone on easy....it is deffinatly different spraying than the traditional systems....it goes on more dry than the wet urethane's....honestly the biggest reason I went with this system is the fact that I am doing this in my garage and not a booth....cuts out a bunch of toxic steps and brings it down to one toxic step (clear)...

Even if I was doing this in a detached garage I woulda gone with more traditional methods...

So pearl white is on....gotta wait a few days on the pinstriper before I start clearing....she should be by on the 7th to pull some lines....(Hellcat Pinstriping on Facebook....local to me and I like her work....less will be more but at the very least she will be pulling the division seam on the belt line)

The color (again) is pearl white....artificial light has it looking like silver in the photo....it really is white to the neked eye...man there was a ton of pearl in the mix (I'm surprised it payed down as good as it did....) it's gonna be straight flamboyant in the light!

Looks nice, but I gotta tell ya I kinda miss the contrast of the orange!

  15. Looks great! Unlike Chaz I prefer this to the orange. The orange and yellow reminded me of a candy corn.

Chaz....the problem I had with it is exactly what K13 said.....and was my first comment when it darkened up drying...."fack....it looks like a candy corn..." If I coulda gotten it to act right it woulda been amazing....is what it is....I do like this version a whole lot as well....that pearl white has a metric crapton of pearl in it....I am surprised it laid down as well as it did...

Laid one more coat down today and it lightened up some more....then pulled the tape....it's awesome....now to lay the transparent base to level the seam in preparation for Hellcat Pinstriping!

Not that you can tell much difference but I laid down the waterborne transparent base in prep for the pin striper....and I pulled more tape and paper to get ready for the clear coat.

    I love it!

Thanks for the kind words guys....

More clear....I hadda lot of orange peal on the cab and hood so I wet sanded and re cleared....it came out the second go round...all that's left is the bed...there is a spot I found on the lower passenger fender that had a serious flaw in it....I am in the process of re-blending it back in so I can clear it....amazing how you can be over every inch of the entire body and still miss stuff....frustrating...

    Reassembly shortly!
