Technical Show What You Made With Your Lathe

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Gauder the goof, Feb 12, 2015.

  1. I'm finally upgrading from my tiny atlas to a large toolroom style lathe. Show me what you've made for your hot-rod, or any other fun parts. I need some ideas.

Also just picked up a 16" rotary table for my mill.

Congrats, bu keep the Atlas. I still use my bench lathe more than my big Sheldon. Anything smaller than a couple of inches, spacers, bushings, bolts and what not, goes in the small one. Also use the rotary table quite a bit for bolt circles.

Yes definitely keep the small Mach..I have a wade 8a lathe 36" bed an a Hendy conehead 72" bed a gorton 9j mill and a kwilway boring bar.. Very useful in building hotrods with modifying suspension brakes an drivetrains... An you can make some very professional looking brackets spacers fittings bolts .. My newest Mach tools are about 65 years old.. I collect them like I do old cars....

Lots and lots of suspension components - 4-links, panard bars, even narrowed Ford 9-inch rear ends. Plus lots of engine component work - polished crankshafts, cut down valves, pushrods. The list is as endless as your imagination and ingenuity.

I seem to make tools more than parts. No pictures but I made a hammer form to make an air cleaner base. And my wife won't let me forget the time that I cut the bottom off of the Christmas tree to make a clutch pilot tool.........Hey the parts store was closed!

  9. Biggest things I use mine for on hot rods,,,, make spindle bearing adapters, fit kingpin bushings, make suspension components (like fit tubing for bushings), make bungs (for split bones). As you can see, for building hot rods, its a money making/saving tool.

Raise your Halon fire bottle if you have ever caught a chip bin full of thin magnesium ribbon, chips and cutting oil on fire.
You now know the definition of "Major Pucker Factor" Ask me how I know.
No photos cause I almost got my ass canned!!!!!!!!
    Lesson learned
