Wow!! I used to buy parts at Alt and James Speed Shop back in the day and I don't remember that cool T coupe.......
I most confess, that's as beautiful as a loaded gun! I don't love the look, but I get the purpose! And I would like it more from the other side, not pointed against me.
I like it a lot, could you imagine seeing that car pull up beside you at a stoplight? I am also hoping to see a thread on the Willys convertible gasser some time in the future.
No doubt the Tall T coupe has the aerodynamics of a barn but it is absolutely one of the coolest and probably one of the most ill handling cars back in the day,I would love to see some old super 8 film of it going through the gears. HRP
Yes I quite agree, I am a Tall "T" Freak and that "T" Coupe is just toooo cool, Its great to see "T"s like this just to be different. Good bit of history Mines on the street TALL "T"s FOREVER
T coupes, they're cool in an odd way.Even Steinbeck wrote about them.I used to consider them "clown cars" when I was a kid in the 70's,but over the years they have wormed their way into my heart. But a T gasser just scares the heck out of me.
Brings back memories of the 26 2 door that I hauled home in the mid 60s, with plans to build a full fendered tall T with a Pontiac 4 banger, but my Dad made me get it out of his garage so it was sold and that one never got off the ground. But I never forgot my dreams and had to go in different directions until I was out on my own.
I can't imagine this surviving unless it was put away. It would be to easy to get it crossed up followed by a roll. Only a matter of time. Love the look though.
don't know where it ended up,but the T was made into a high end street rod, probably thirty years ago.I am having dinner with one of the members of the Ault and James team tonight, and will try and come up with more info...on a side note, they printed up 60's t-shirts with the old Ault and James logo, front and back...got mine last friday
I remember the car even though I was young... as best I recall the story was big wheelie, came down and broke at the firewall...maybe at the US INDY nats??
My first T-bucket ran "pie crust" slicks in 1964 - on the street. Oh, by the way, they were not referred to as "pie crust" back then, at least not in the Niagara region. That lofty front end stance followed the prevailing theory for weight transfer. Judging by the downward angle of the drag link, that beast must have been a handful due to bump-steer.
I wish there was a "way back" machine, so we could travel back to those days. Going to the strip in modern times means almost cookie cutter cars. I don't even mean the pro ranks. Local strips are full of Camaro's, Mustangs, Malibus, etc. While these are great cars, in their own right, Nothing beats the originality of those days in the 50's, 60's and early 70's
P.S. this is my Anglia in my profile pic and I plan on having in on the road within a year. It's is a late 60's drag veteran painted grey & ran a 394" Olds and a 4 spd. Hydro. I bought it from fee-bay from SanFernando Ca. It ran for years @ L.A.C.R. and surrounding area. In later years (late 80's) it had a s.b.c. for power, was painted blue and called: "Witchy Woman" Looking for info on it. thanks
